5 things to take away from Taylor Swift’s support for Kamala Harris on Instagram: Takes aim at Trump for AI video, praises Walz

Pop superstar Taylor Swift has broken her silence on the current state of American politics, endorsing US Vice President Kamala Harris over Donald Trump. In a lengthy statement posted on her Instagram account, which has over 283 million followers, Taylor backed Kamala after the presidential debate between the Democrat and former US President, Republican candidate Donald Trump on Tuesday night (Wednesday morning in India). Until now, Taylor had remained conspicuously silent on the subject, despite many of her fans starting to organise under the banner ‘Swifties for Kamala’ and raising tens of thousands of dollars for the Democratic candidate. But in her new post, the 34-year-old singer said the discovery of AI-generated images of her falsely supporting Donald Trump ‘awakened my fears about AI and the dangers of spreading misinformation’, which prompted her to speak out.

Taylor signed the post with her full name and the words ‘childless cat lady,’ an obvious dig at Donald’s Republican candidate J.D. Vance.

Ahead, are the highlights of Taylor’s statement which she released along with a photo of herself holding a cat; this was a 2023 photo she took for Time Magazine’s Person of the Year photoshoot in which she was holding a cat.

Sarcasm on Donald Trump

In August 2024, Donald Trump shared several AI-generated images that showed Taylor Swift and her fans falsely supporting his campaign for the presidency. Reacting to this, he wrote in his new post, “Recently I discovered that ‘my’ AI falsely supporting Donald Trump’s run for president was posted on their site. This really sparked my fears about AI and the dangers of spreading misinformation. It led me to the conclusion that I as a voter need to be very transparent about my actual plans for this election. The simplest way to combat misinformation is the truth.”

On the Kamala Harris-Donald Trump debate

Taylor also urged people to watch the presidential debates while preparing to vote, before accusing Donald of using her name in vain, “Like many of you, I watched the debates tonight. If you haven’t watched yet, now is a great time to research the issues and positions these candidates have taken on the topics that matter most to you. As a voter, I make sure to watch and read everything I can about their proposed policies and plans for this country.”

Why is she voting for Kamala Harris?

Donald Trump and Kamala Harris discussed abortion during the debate, with Kamala claiming she was getting a national abortion ban plan. Back in 2022, Taylor had denounced the end of US abortion rights, and it is one of the issues she supports Kamala on. She wrote, “I will be giving my vote to Kamala Harris and Tim Walz in the 2024 Presidential Election. I am voting for @kamalaharris because she fights for the rights and causes I think need a warrior to champion. I think she is a steady, talented leader and I believe we can accomplish a lot in this country if we lead with peace and not chaos.”

Shoutout to Tim Walz

Praising Tim Walz for his support of LGBTQ rights, pro-LGBTQ Taylor further wrote, “I am so pleased and impressed by the selection of my colleague @timwalz who has stood up for LGBTQ+ rights, IVF and women’s right to their own bodies for decades.” Tim, the Minnesota governor and Democratic candidate for vice president, is a former public school teacher.

Message to American Voters

Taylor urged her American fans to register and cast their vote in the upcoming election, writing, “I’ve done my research, and I’ve made my choice. You have to do your research, and you have to make your choice. I also want to say, especially to first-time voters: remember that you have to be registered to vote! I also think it’s really easy to vote early. I’ll put links in my story to register and find early voting dates and information.”
