Singer Kaka talks about his upcoming song Neend and his musical journey so far.
Kaka, the voice behind the hit track Billo Baage Billiyaan Da Ki Karenge, describes his latest single, Neend, as a modern twist on ghazals and qawalis. “I used to sing qawalis as a child. I loved their lyrics and composition,” he says, adding, “With this song, I wanted it to sound modern and also like a ghazal or a qawali. I have paid a lot of attention to the tempo, speed and lyrics to maintain the emotion and make it in a way that everyone can understand the Punjabi used in it.”
Neend also marks Kaka’s evolution as a songwriter. He revealed that his dissatisfaction with the songs of artists around him inspired him to take matters into his own hands and start crafting songs that reflect his personal style and emotions. “I have been singing for years, but when I wanted to release my own songs, I wasn’t influenced by other people’s songs. I felt like one or two lines were picked up from here and there. That’s when I felt the need to write my own songs. Now, I feel good when people see me as a writer as well,” the 30-year-old Kaka said.
Reflecting on his journey to fame, Kaka says his rise has been gradual, shaped by his passion for music from a young age. “Nothing happened suddenly or overnight with a single song. My parents were interested in listening to music, so I guess my journey began from there,” he recalls, “Later, I started singing in school and college, and then eventually writing songs as well. Ek Chota Sa Sitaara Tha Main College Ka.”
Furthermore, he revealed that the pandemic provided him with an opportunity to delve deeper into music creation, leading to songs that connected deeply with his listeners. “When the COVID-19 pandemic happened, I got ample time as I was free and didn’t have to go anywhere,” he explained. Kaka revealed that this period gave him a chance to explore his talent further, leading to the creation of music that was initially not meant for wide appeal but found a special place in the hearts of his listeners.
Asked about the possibility of entering Bollywood like the Punjabi artistes who have lent their voices to countless songs in Hindi films, he said: “I would be happy. If they ask me to write two songs, I will write four. However, I don’t want to roam from door to door looking for opportunities. I am in a good space, but if something good comes my way, why not!”
