John Carney’s upcoming musical comedy Power Ballad Lionsgate has a stellar ensemble cast led by Paul Rudd and Nick Jonas. The film features an “uplifting and music-driven story” centered around a former wedding singer played by Rudd and a young rock star played by Jonas, with a central conflict revolving around a song that comes between the two of them.
Adam Fogelson, President of Lionsgate’s Motion Picture Group, expressed his excitement for the project, saying, “I’ve always been a huge fan of John’s films, and have had my eye on this particular movie for some time. It perfectly combines John’s immense creative talents with a marketable concept and an incredible cast. I couldn’t be more thrilled that he and the rest of the team have entrusted us with this.”
The film was co-written by Carney and Peter McDonald and financed by 30 West. The cast also includes Jack Reynor, known for his roles in Carney’s previous films. Sing Street And Flora and Son,
Likely Story producers Anthony Bregman and Peter Cron are producing the film alongside Carney, along with Treasure Entertainment’s Robert Walpole and Rebecca O’Flanagan. The team previously collaborated on Carney’s recent film Flora and Sonwhich was sold to Apple TV+ for $20 million after its Sundance premiere.
Carney shared his excitement about the partnership with Lionsgate, saying, “I am so happy that this film, which has been in my heart for so long, has found its home. Music movies are made to be watched together, and what better studio than Lionsgate to bring this film to the world the way it was made: with a crowd, in the dark, next to strangers who become friends for a few hours.”
