Ranbir Kapoor Saawariya Failure: “I’m glad it didn’t do well at the box office”

Ranbir Kapoor who gave a blockbuster movie Animal The actor is reflecting on his career after his debut film ‘Andhadhun’ which was released last year. The actor said that he is happy that his first film ‘Andhadhun’ was a success. Saawariya The film failed miserably at the box office, as it made him humble and prepared him to not take failures or successes seriously and consider them a part of his profession. Ranbir also spoke about Indian auteur Sanjay Leela Bhansali (SLB), whom he assisted in the early stages of his career after completing his studies abroad.

“When I came back, every director or producer in the industry wanted to launch me. But, I was a huge fan of Sanjay Leela Bhansali. I thought, ‘Maybe he doesn’t know me’. So, I made a resume and sat outside his office,” he told Nikhil Kamath on his podcast, People By WTF.

He said, “I waited, he wasn’t there, but he saw my CV and understood who I was. The first day he met me, he said, ‘I want to make a film with you’.

He then started working with Bhansali as his assistant, working 13-14 hour shifts per day. Ranbir said that Bhansali is a hard worker and has a very short temper.

He then added, “It hardened me. Then Saawariya happened which was again a huge disaster. Looking back, I’m glad it didn’t turn out well because it really prepared me for life ahead.”

Saawariya The film also marked the debut of actress Sonam Kapoor, who also assisted Sanjay Leela Bhansali, and the film clashed with the Farah Khan directorial at the box office. Calmness Starring Bollywood icon Shah Rukh Khan, the film also marked the debut of Deepika Padukone.

Ranbir also talked about the possibility of joining politics. He said, “No, I love the world of art, creation and being an artist. I would love to die making things and directing films, I know I am not meant to be a producer, I have produced a film, Jagga The spy Which flopped miserably at the box office. I realised this was a skill I didn’t have.”

He then added that he is not a social person, before asking Nikhil, “In politics, you should be a social person?”

When Ranbir replied in the affirmative, he said, “Yes, I am not a social person.”
