The day is dedicated to Lord Ganesha and is celebrated with great reverence among Hindus. Each Sankashti Chaturthi celebrated throughout the year has a different name, significance, Peetha (sacred place) and importance. On August 22, devotees will honor this unique day by praying for the removal of obstacles and the fulfillment of their desires. In the Hindu calendar, Adhik Mas Sankashti Chaturthi is greatly respected as it falls during the additional lunar month of Adhik Mas, which is considered even more auspicious and powerful.
Sankashti Chaturthi 2024: Significance
It is a holy day dedicated to the honor of Lord Ganesha. Devotees celebrate this day with great enthusiasm, often fasting until moonrise. There are two Chaturthi dates in each Hindu month. Vinayaka Chaturthi falls after Amavasya (new moon) during Shukla Paksha (bright lunar phase), while Sankashti Chaturthi falls after Poornima (full moon) during Krishna Paksha (dark lunar phase). Each Chaturthi is associated with a different Peetha or holy site and a form of Lord Ganesha. Devotees especially worship Durva Bilva Patra Peetha on Sankashti Chaturthi in the month of Sawan, which reflects the many traditions and significance of this holy day.

Sankashti Chaturthi 2024: Rituals
- After cleaning the place of worship, place the idol of Lord Ganesha on a wooden plank and take a bath. Decorate the idol with flowers, durva grass and yellow cloth.
- Light a ghee lamp and incense stick in front of the idol of Lord Ganesha. Offer modak, bananas, sweet betel leaf and laddu to the Lord.
- Recite powerful Ganapati Mantra, Bindayak Katha and Aarti of Lord Ganesha during the puja.
- Eat satvik food like fruits, makhana kheer, sabudana and sama rice khichdi during the fast.
