Nkem shared the news of his brother’s death in a Facebook post. “Heartbroken to lose my little brother and to know he is now at peace,” he wrote. He also shared a photo of the siblings having fun outdoors together.

Obi’s death comes several years after his tragic accident in 2019 in which he lost both his legs. The actor was hit by a car outside Erewhon Market in Los Angeles. The impact severed his right leg and he had to have his right leg amputated upon arriving at the hospital. At the time of the accident, a GoFundMe page was created which raised $287,000 for the actor. The money raised helped Obi get a prosthetic leg and cover hospital expenses that were not covered by his insurance, reports Page Six.

Obi was an athletic man and he didn’t let the accident change that fact about him. According to the LA Times report, within 36 days of the accident he was back in the gym and working out his upper body. He told the media outlet in 2019, “I can’t live in this world without being like an Olympic athlete in terms of certain things, you know — kindness and health — because I don’t have any other choice. So I have a kind of toughness inside of me, and I’m like, ‘OK my legs are cut off. I don’t know how to do this, but I know how to do this.'”

Obi’s co-star expresses her grief

Obi’s co-star Mary-Margaret Humes expressed her shock and sadness over his death on Instagram. She wrote, “These words do not come easily. It’s hard for me to imagine you have left us, my dear friend. You were and always will be a shining light. What an example of pure and unconditional love and perseverance you set, even in the face of life’s challenges recently.”

The post included several clips of the two from the set of Dawson Creek, where Humes played her mother.
