Selena Gomez said she can’t have children: she has a lot of medical problems
LOS ANGELES – “Only Murders in the Building” star Selena Gomez has revealed that she cannot have children of her own due to several health risks.
The 32-year-old said she plans to start a family by the age of 35.
“I’ve never said this, but unfortunately I can’t carry my own children,” Gomez said in an interview with Vanity Fair magazine in October. “I have a number of medical conditions that would put my life and my baby’s life at risk. That’s something I’ve had to deal with for a while.”
In 2015, she was diagnosed with lupus, a disease in which the immune system attacks its own tissues and organs. The following year, she was also diagnosed with anxiety and depression. In 2017, she underwent a kidney transplant due to lupus. Later in 2020, the singer-actor was diagnosed with bipolar disorder.
Gomez said she was open to adoption, in part because her own mother, former stage performer Mandy Teefey, was also adopted.
“I probably wouldn’t be here today. I don’t know what her life would have been like. She and I are so grateful for the turn life took.”
She said that even though their journey is different, maybe she will become a mother one day.
“It didn’t necessarily turn out the way I thought it would. I thought it would turn out the same way it does for everyone else. I’m in a much better position in that regard. I feel fortunate that there are amazing people who are willing to do surrogacy or adoption, which are huge possibilities for me.”
“It made me really grateful for other outlets for people who are dying to be moms. I’m one of those people. I’m excited about what this journey will be like, but it will be a little different. At the end of the day, I don’t care. It will be mine. It will be my baby.”
Gomez was most recently seen in the Jacques Audiard-directed “Emilia Perez,” which recently won the TIFF Variety Artisan Award at the 2024 Toronto International Film Festival.
