Inside Sean Diddy’s ‘brutal’ Brooklyn jail, plagued by murders and suicides; it once housed R. Kelly and Ghislaine Maxwell

Hip-hop legend Sean ‘Diddy’ Combs’ once luxurious life was destroyed when he was incarcerated at Brooklyn’s Metropolitan Detention Center (MDC). The notorious federal prison is notorious for its harsh conditions and high-profile inmates. The MDC, which has previously housed celebrities such as R. Kelly and Ghislaine Maxwell, was a far cry from the star-studded parties and opulent mansions that defined Combs’ career for decades.

Combs, 54, has been asked by his attorney to release him and has vowed that he will never keep any woman at his home following the heinous sex crime charges leveled against him.

Sean ‘Diddy’ Combs booked into Brooklyn jail

After Diddy was arrested on sex trafficking and racketeering charges, he was held without bail at the Metropolitan Detention Center in Brooklyn, NY. This concrete facility, known for its harsh and barbaric conditions, houses over 1,200 individuals. The New York Times report indicates violence, food safety issues, and a history of tragic events such as murders and suicides.

People in prison often complain about violent fights, dirty living spaces, a lack of adequate staff and staff who facilitate illegal activities such as smuggling drugs and other contraband. According to the AP, they are often put on lockdown and restricted from leaving their cells for essential purposes such as visits, calls, showers and exercise.

Over the past five years, more than six MDC Brooklyn employees have been charged with crimes. Some of these employees were accused of taking bribes or being involved in drugs and other illegal activities, according to an Associated Press analysis of arrests involving the agency.

Apart from problematic staffing, the building has long been plagued by problems such as week-long power cuts, which once left inmates shivering in the cold without any heat supply. There has also been criticism of the breakdown of infrastructure and the way the Covid-19 pandemic has been handled.

Brooklyn jail popular for high-profile inmates

The infamous facility has housed a number of high-profile inmates, including R. Kelly, Ghislaine Maxwell, Michael Cohen, cryptocurrency fraudster Sam Bankman-Fried and rapper Fetty Wap. Sean Combs’ admission is another glaring addition to the prison’s other notable inmates which include pharma bro Martin Shkreli, NXIVM cult leader Keith Raniere, former Mexican official Genaro Garcia Luna and ex-Honduran president Juan Orlando Hernández Alvarado.

In June, 37-year-old Uriel White was stabbed to death. Just a month later, 36-year-old Edwin Cordero died from injuries he suffered in an altercation. Cordero’s lawyer, Andrew Delack, told The New York Times that his client was trapped in an overcrowded, understaffed and neglected prison that was a horrible place to be. In the past three years, at least four people have died by suicide at the prison.
