Paul Schrader criticized Joker: Folie à Deux in a new interview, where he said he couldn’t make the musical last longer than 20 minutes.
Paul Schrader, acclaimed author of Taxi Driver and a filmmaker himself, was not a huge fan of Joker: Folie à Deux, to say the least. The Todd Phillips musical drama received negative reviews and emerged as the year’s biggest box office disappointment. In a new conversation with interview magazinePaul has now shared his thoughts on the Joaquin Phoenix-starrer, revealing that he couldn’t stand the film after about 20 minutes and decided to leave the theater to buy something instead. What Paul said about Joker’s Folie a Deux
During the chat, when Paul was asked about the sequel to the 2019 blockbuster, he said, “I watched about 10 or 15 minutes of it. I went, bought something, came back, looked for 10 more minutes. That was enough.”
He then called the film a “really bad musical” and added, “I don’t like any of those guys. I don’t like them as actors. I don’t like them as characters. I like the whole thing. No. I mean, they are the ones who, if they come to your house, you will go out the back door.

One of the most anticipated films of the year, Joker: Folie à Deux, turned out to be a massive disappointment at the US box office and worldwide. Starring Joaquin Phoenix as the Joker and Lady Gaga as Harley Quinn, the film, directed by Todd Phillips, was released in theaters on October 4. It grossed $37.8 million in its opening weekend, but saw a steep decline by the second weekend. Additionally, it earned a terrible D rating from CinemaScore and faced poor word-of-mouth criticism.
Paul Schrader’s new film Oh Canada premieres at the New York Film Festival. Based on the 2021 novel Foregone by Russell Banks, it stars Richard Gere, Uma Thurman and Jacob Elordi.
