International Day of Persons with Disabilities: From Zero To Taare Zameen Par – Films That Champion the Cause

Today is International Day of Persons with Disabilities, a day dedicated to raising awareness about disability issues and supporting the rights, dignity and welfare of people with disabilities. The occasion highlights the importance of including people with disabilities in all aspects of life – political, social, economic and cultural. Over the years, people with special needs have made incredible achievements, and the entertainment industry has also played a role in celebrating their journey through powerful stories. On this special day, let’s take a look at some films that show the spirit of overcoming challenges:

1. ghoomar – Zee5

The way Saiyami Kher plays the character of Anina “Ani” Dixit, a paralyzed cricketer who loses her left hand in an accident, is really commendable. After his defeat, Ani meets unsuccessful cricketer Padam “Paddy” Singh, who trains him to bowl and make a comeback in the game.

2. Srikanth – Netflix

You can’t call yourself a fan of Rajkummar Rao if you haven’t seen this biographical drama. As Srikanth Bolla, a visually impaired boy who challenges stereotypes and becomes a successful industrialist, Rajukmar’s performance is nothing short of inspiring.

3. Zero – Netflix

In the film directed by Shah Rukh Khan, Anushka Sharma shines as Afia Yousafzai Bhinder, an NSAR scientist (a fictional portrayal of NASA) suffering from cerebral palsy. The story of how Baua Singh (played by Shahrukh Khan), a small boy from Meerut, falls in love with this scientist is truly magical.

4. hiccups – Prime Video

Directed by Sidharth Malhotra, the film stars Rani Mukerji as a teacher suffering from Tourette syndrome, a neurological condition characterized by involuntary motor tics. The story follows her journey as she turns what was considered her weakness into a strength and proves herself in her profession.

5. Margarita with a Straw – Netflix

In this 2014 project, Kalki Koechlin played the role of Laila Kapoor, who suffers from cerebral palsy. From securing a scholarship to living a life like any other girl of her age, Kalki’s character is truly an example for many.

6. Black – Netflix

This cult classic, directed by Sanjay Leela Bhansali, tells the story of a young woman, Michelle McNally (played by Rani Mukherjee), who is both deaf and blind. His inspiring journey, guided by a dedicated teacher, Debraj Sahay (played by Amitabh Bachchan), who helps him overcome his disabilities, is worth watching multiple times.

7. Pa – Google Play

The film focuses on the life of Auro (played by Amitabh Bachchan), a boy suffering from the genetic disorder Progeria. The story depicts his positive spirit and his relationship with his father Amol Arte (played by Abhishek Bachchan).

8. Barfi! – Netflix

Directed by Anurag Basu, Barfi! It was selected as India’s official entry for the Best Foreign Language Film category at the 85th Academy Awards. The film is based on the life of a deaf and mute young man, Barfi (played by Ranbir Kapoor) and his relationship with an autistic girl named Jhilmil (played by Priyanka Chopra).

9. my name is khan – Prime Video

This powerful story is based on Rizwan Khan (played by Shahrukh Khan), who has Asperger syndrome, a form of autism spectrum disorder. He sets out on a journey to meet the President of the United States and spread the message of love and peace. Meanwhile, his Hindu wife Mandira Rathod (played by Kajol) faces Islamophobic discrimination after the September 11 attacks.

10. Taare Zameen Par

Directed by Aamir Khan, the film highlights the struggles of Ishaan Nandkishore Awasthi (played by Darsheel Safary), a dyslexic child. His journey of overcoming educational and personal challenges with the help of his compassionate teacher, Ram Shankar Nikumbh (played by Aamir Khan) is extremely inspiring.
