A unique blend of concrete and abstract draws the viewer’s attention to TC Rajan’s paintings. Displayed as part of the Surya Mahotsav, his art is a testament to injustice. “I hope that my art will shed new light on social issues. If at least one person thinks differently after seeing my work, that’s all I can ask for,” he says.

Observation is at the heart of Rajan’s art. “When you see something that moves you, you have no choice but to bring it to life in your art.” Their performances touch on some tragic events, including the 2018 floods in Kerala, the murder of Madhu, a tribal youth in Palakkad, and violence against animals and children. The self-taught artist uses acrylic and oil as mediums.

Art was his childhood companion and Rajan credits his father for encouraging his skills. “He didn’t know how to draw, but he had a keen eye for detail. He will guide me and accompany me to competitions and exhibitions.

Now, with nearly 50 exhibitions under his belt, Rajan hopes to share what he’s learned with others. As president of the Kerala Chitrakala Parishad, he has organized several camps for people of all ages, giving them the opportunity to try their hand at the art.

“Kids may want to spread out on the floor or sit awkwardly while drawing. let them! Technology comes later. “Art is about finding different ways to express what’s in your mind.”
