A festival of dances cured by Bharat Kalanjali is slowly gaining momentum for young, talented dancers to share their art with the connoisseur people of Chennai. In its fourth edition this year, the line-ups were shown the dancers, which were shortlisted on the basis of their applications and some guest performances.
The idea behind ‘Jharna’ is that dancers are given the opportunity to conceive, choreographed and create a original work.
Himanshu Srivastava presented the ‘Ankalaya – The Rel of the Thumb’ about Ekalavya. Like a forest resident, in aesthetics, Himanshu began with a sequence, in which the acting was being killed in the battlefield, the statement then went into a flashback mode, which was in his previous life as Ekalavya.
The dancer honestly immersed himself into the character. Their eagerness to train under Guru Drronachari, facing rejection, learning archery by observing your guru in privacy, and slipping your thumb GurudakshinaWas dealt with clarity.
HimanshuThe expression ranged from praise and curiosity to sadness and disillusionment. The process of making a sculpture from the soil goes on his guru and his devotion and worship were handled with sensitivity. His depiction emphasized the use of four fingers for archery after losing the thumb, dramatically conceived, but the most poignant moment he removes wings from his head and it was in total surrender on his guru’s feet Keeps Himanshu’s performance was a notable aspect Stayai Bhava, in which the space between himself and Dronachari was continuously maintained.

The idea of bringing a change in a clay doll ‘Antaram’ as an ego was an interesting addition, which could be better detected for greater impact. The introduction of the genius at intervals, especially to show the archery practice of Ekalavya, harassed the flow of the story.
The musical team consisted of Sridhar Vasudevan on Vocals, Sarvesh Karthik on Rhythm inputs, Thiruwara Veeramani on Violin and TV Sukanya on flute. However, violin and flute overcame the vocal rendering. Soundscape must be re -worked to match the dance.
