One of the most auspicious Hindu festivals, Chaitra Navratri, is dedicated to the worship of Goddess Durga in her nine divine forms. The Hindu calendar is celebrated during the Chaitra month, this festival also marks the beginning of the Hindu New Year in many regions of India. In 2025, Chaiti Navratri will begin on 30 March and end on 7 April with Ram Navami.

Importance of Chaitra Navratri

  • The symbol of the victory of good over evil – This festival is reminiscent of the victory of Goddess Durga over Mahishasura.
  • The Hindu marks the New Year – Many areas including Maharashtra (Gudi Padwa) and Andhra Pradesh (Yugadi) celebrate Hindus on this day.
  • Spiritual cleaning and devotion – It is a time of fasting, meditation and dedication to Goddess Durga for spiritual and physical welfare.
  • Confession with Ram Navami – The festival ends with the anniversary of Lord Rama on the ninth day.

Details of 9-day celebrations

Day 1 – Shailputri Puja (March 30, 2025)
Devotees invited Himalayan daughter Devi Shailputri.

Ghatasthapana is done by planting water filled with water and barley seeds.

Day 2 – Brahmacharini Puja (31 March, 2025)
Devotees worship Brahmacharini Mata, who is a symbol of penance and knowledge.

Fasting begins, and devotees consume only true food.

Day 3 – Chandraghant Pooja (1 April, 2025)
Goddess Chandraghant, who provides peace and bravery, is worshiped.

Offer milk, kheer and sweets to the deity.

Day 4 – Kushmanda Puja (April 2, 2025)
To provide faith and vitality, it is believed that Goddess Kushmanda is honored.

The offer of Malpua or Sweet is considered auspicious.

Day 5 – Skandamata Puja (April 3, 2025)
Worshiping Skandamata, the mother of Lord Kartikeya.

Yellow color is auspicious on this day.

Day 6 – Katyani Puja (4 April, 2025)
Devotees pray to Katyani Mata for protection from evil.

Day 7 – Kalari Puja (April 5, 2025)
The most fierce form of Durga is worshiped.

Day 8 – Mahagauri Puja (6 April, 2025)
On the eighth day, Durga Ashtami is considered highly important.

Many people inspect Kanya Puja, where young girls are worshiped as an incarnation of Goddess Durga.

Day 9 – Siddhidati Puja and Ram Navami (April 7, 2025)
Worship of Siddhidati Mata, which provides knowledge and divine powers.

Fasting rules and traditions

  • Devotees follow a pure vegetarian diet, avoid onion, garlic and alcohol.
  • Some Nirjala (without water) or Phalhar (fruit-based) observe fasting.
  • Virgo Pujan is performed on Ashtami or Navami, where young girls are worshiped and food is offered.
