Last September, fashion designer Jenjum Gadi stepped away from some brief clothes. He dipped in an alternative creative outlet, instead – sculpture. He withdrew home from his mother’s garden in Arunachal Pradesh MalevolentAn exhibition characterized by brass fruits and vegetables.
With his spectacular success, Gadi achieved a place for herself in the world of art. And now, he is creating his reputation with another performance of brass sculptures, titled Parlokic memoriesThe expansion of its debut, the show uses ancient reps and pursuing techniques to make it complicated Pitch Mitions.

The idols have provided a new medium to the designer to find out memory, spirituality and tradition. And when they may experience more than 15 years in designing clothes, working with metal has been a learning process. “The idea process is quite similar – both are about expansion, texture and storytelling,” they say. “With sculpture, you should be more careful because if something goes wrong, it is very difficult to fix. It is easy to deal with a cloth, but metals are ambitious and an expensive affair.”
Difference of art and fashion
Gadi’s art dive is not an isolated. Today, many fashion designers are searching beyond clothes. Earlier this year, Tarun Tahiliani showed tree of Life – A series of eight tapestries using techniques such as discovery, painting and French knots between humans and nature, Saw Embroidery, and Mother-Off-Paril Detailing-India Art Fair.
In the last October, David Abraham and Rakesh Thakor, the pair behind the respected fashion brand Abraham and Thakor, lended the walls of their major store in New Delhi to demonstrate 18 amazing canvas by Mangla Bai Marvi’s Baiga Body Art. Marawai is an indigenous artist from Madhya Pradesh and one of the remaining is Badinin (Female tattoo artists) are committed to preserving and sharing the Baiga tattoo art form in their community. By making space for this ancient practice, A&T made the intersection of fashion and indigenous art champion – which they have often seen for inspiration. And don’t forget how, in 2019, Sanjay Garg of Raw Mango recalled with a series of 10 years of his brand.
“If you are a creative person, you are an artist. And you are always looking for a different avenue to express yourself; sometimes it is not enough to express the clothes that we want to say,” Says. ” “Art gives us freedom to go deep, slow down and connect with our roots in a different way. Also, the art scene is very experimental right now, and it is opening Avenue for designers because many of them are playing with mixed media to find an expression.”

Mumbai, memory and nature
Along with a team of skilled metal artisans – specialized from the northeast in creating artifacts for monasteries, sculpture efforts of Gadi have only begun. “This is always a challenge to do some personal translation in a traditional craft, but we have created a great understanding. I guide my team, and they are also learning and understanding the importance of creating high quality art. It usually starts with a memory or a feeling that I want to express. Molding, casting and finishing,” he says. “I am also alert to the skill and labor that goes into it and therefore, we work on a ‘price per piece’. [unlike my tailors who are salaried],
Gadi is already planning her next show, this time in Mumbai. “The coordination continues. Hopefully, we will be able to do so at the end of this year. I am still developing the concept, but it will continue to detect memory and nature – and perhaps use with some new materials and forms. It is going to be a more intimate presentation,” he concluded.
