Veteran actors Sharmila Tagore and Simi Garewal participated in the screening of Satyajit Ray’s prestigious 1970 film “Arener Deen Ratri” at the ongoing Cannes Film Festival on Monday evening.
A 4K restored version of the Bengali-language film titled “Days and Nights in the Forest” in English is shown in the 78th edition of the prestigious Gala under the Cannes Classics section.
Tagore made an appearance on a red carpet in a good green saree with his daughter and jewelery designer Saba Pataudi, who opted for all-yellow ethnic dress. Tagore joined by his co-star Gerewal, who was prepared in a gown by Indian Cutor Label Carlet in his signature white color.
He joined the red carpet by the film’s Gala presenter and Hollywood filmmaker Wes Anderson, who led its six -year long restoration.
Ray’s long -time fan Anderson presented the film before his screening.
“Arani Deen Ratri”, which examines the subjects of separation, class and modernity, follows the story of four city-nerves men, who run into the forests of Palamau (now in Jharkhand) for a careless holiday, only to go through a journey of self-khoj.
In the film, Tagore plays a calm and elegant city woman Aparna, while Gerewal plays a tribal Santhal girl named Dali.
“Arneer Deen Ratri” has been presented and restored by the World Cinema Project of the Film Foundation in L’Aritage Ritroetta in collaboration with the film Heritage Foundation (FHF), Janus Films and Kasauti Collection. The funding was provided by the Golden Globe Foundation.
Apart from this, a part of the screening was Purnima Dutta, Margaret Bode, Executive Director of Film Foundation and FHF founder Shivendra Singh Dungarpur.
Based on the novel of the same name by writer Sunil Gangopadhyay, “Arani Deen Ratri” also included Soumitra Chatterjee, Subhendu Chatterjee, Samit Bhanja, Robbie Ghosh and Aparna Sen.
Last year, the 4K restored version of Shyam Benegal’s “Manthan” (1976) was displayed in the same section in Cannes.
Arribam Sam Sharma’s Manipuri film “Ishanau” (1990) and 1978 Malayalam films “Thamp” were shown under Cannes Classics in 2023 and 2022 respectively.
