The silk paintings of Olympay Ramakrishna describe the developed stories of women of urban middle classes

The series depicts women from whom we encounter every day – in the neighborhood, in offices, on travel and friends. Each image captures the essence of women of urban middle class of India: flexible, frequent adaptation, and balanced the delicate tug between tradition and modernity.

As a researcher studying femininity and women’s identity, Olympa first arrived in Bangalore from Normandi, France in 2010, where he was killed by a new generation of urban middle -class women. She notes the changes she saw, she surpassed clothing options. From preparing the paths of their own life to balance many roles, these women navigate two worlds – one global impact -shaped, the other vested in the tradition.

Pointing to one of the paintings, she reflects on generational changes: the difference between this woman, her mother and her grandmother is huge, she says something that is very rare in Europe, where three generations of women in their family have led to a large extent.

The artist first painted women – some neighbors, friends and her husband’s two cousins ​​- canvas. He then took a picture of the works, printed them on dupian silk, and suspended the pictures from the roof, with a gentle bowls of the sari drying on the roofs. The idea was inspired in the evening that families were seen gathering families on the roofs of Bangalore – fresh dried clothes were collected, playing the game, grandparents -grandeur chatting, and birds returning to the park.

After growing up around silk – Ironing wedding dresses for your designer father, John Francois – felt like a natural medium for installation of clothes Olymps. The project, which began two years ago, started in November 2023 in Bengaluru, and has since visited Puducherry, Delhi, Chandigarh and Paris. Subsequently, he plans to detect women from Kerala and Tamil Nadu through a large woven tapestry.
