Veer Das urged Delhi to urge Indie dogs after SC’s rehabilitation order

New Delhi: The Supreme Court order to transfer all stray dogs to shelters in Delhi-NCR has created a debate among the public.

While some have welcomed the move, others have criticized the decision, arguing that it goes against animal welfare principles.

Amidst the ongoing debate, Veer Das took on Instagram on Monday evening, urged Delhi to consider adopting an Indie dog.

“If you are a resident of Delhi. Can I persuade you to adopt an indie on the streets, more than one? They are extremely healthy, low maintenance, and will give you more love, affection and gratitude, the more you can imagine as much as you can. I am asking you completely and generously,” he said.

“Support your nearest animal welfare NGOs. I am planning to do so, and I hope you will also. As the appeal is filed in court and procedures take their time, it is important for our humanity to kick immediately. Please add your share, big or shorten, add all this,” Veer Das requested.

He also shared a picture of two dogs, which he adopted by roads a few years ago. Today, a bench of Justices JB Pardwala and R Mahadevan said that all areas should be freed from stray dogs and no compromise. This also made it clear that no occupied animals would be released back to the streets.

It also ordered contempt proceedings against any person or organization that tries to stop the authorities from driving.

Justice Pardwala said, “If a person or organization comes in the way of choosing stray dogs or scoring them, we will proceed to take action against any such resistance.”

The apex court also directed the states and municipal authorities to direct the dog shelters to sterilize and immunize with enough employees.

“NCT Delhi, Gurgaon, Noida, Ghaziabad, MCD, NMDC will start choosing stray dogs from all areas, especially from more weaker areas. It is to see the authorities and if they have to create a force as soon as possible.

It further directed that officers in Delhi-NCR should install a helpline so that all dog bite complaints can be registered, in which an aggressive animal was raised within four hours of a complaint.

It also ordered all the officials to maintain a record of daily stray dogs and detained. The bench stated that CCTV surveillance would ensure compliance, and any dog should be released back to road or public places.
