According to Drik Panchang, Govardhan puja rituals are performed during two main periods: prathakal (morning) and sayankal (evening). Both the times are considered very auspicious.
Pratabaal Muhurta (Morning): 06:24 am to 08:39 am
Duration: 2 hours 15 minutes
During this time, devotees perform morning rituals, offer prayers and arrange Annakoot (mountain of food offerings) for Lord Krishna.
Evening Muhurat (Evening) – Gambling: 15:26 PM to 17:41 PM
Duration: 2 hours 15 minutes
Evening rituals including Govardhan Maharaj Aarti are performed to end the day’s festivities with devotion and gratitude.
Why is Govardhan Puja celebrated?
Govardhan Puja celebrates the protection of Vrindavan by Lord Krishna. When the villagers stopped worshiping Lord Indra and started worshiping Mount Govardhan, Indra became angry and caused torrential rains. Lord Krishna lifted Govardhan Mountain on his little finger for seven days to provide shelter to everyone while teaching the lesson of faith, humility and devotion.
Devotees build a replica of Govardhan Mountain at home using cow dung, soil or grains and offer food items and sweets as Annakoot. Participating in Govardhan Parikrama and lighting lamps are important aspects of the festival.
Govardhan Puja 2025 will be celebrated not on October 21 but on October 22. Adherence to morning and evening Muhurat ensures that the rituals are performed at the most auspicious time. By celebrating Govardhan Puja devotionally, offering Annakoot and performing Aarti, devotees invite peace, prosperity and blessings to their homes.
