‘Regretting You’ Film Review: Colleen Hoover’s Beautifully Empty Adaptation

Cute and superficial, the film begins at a beach party at which a teenage Morgan (Allison Williams) tells Jonah (Dave Franco) that she is pregnant. Jonah is dating Morgan’s independent-minded sister Jenny (Willa Fitzgerald), while Morgan is dating Chris (Scott Eastwood).

Fast forward 17 years, the foursome are celebrating Morgan’s birthday. Morgan and Chris are married and their daughter, Clara (Mckenna Grace), loves her father and her Aunt Jenny – much more than her mother. Jonah has been out of sight for many years but is now back with Jenny and they have a child. A horrific accident forces Clara, Jonah and Morgan to face inconvenient truths.

The film has a bleak predictability, none of the emotional beats hitting home. The clichés, the terminal illness, the gruff grandfather, the movie posters (China Town And two jacks) movie jokes (“Tom Cruise saves the world by running”) and sarcastic friend, Lexi (Sam Morelos), to nerdy friend, Efrain (Ethan Costanilla), jostle for space.

Although Jenny talks about going back to work after maternity leave, it seems like everyone is lounging on cozy couches in casual clothes and eating and drinking beautiful food, smoothies, and wine. Even the fridge and kitchen counters are filled with color-coordinated bottles of elegant food! A family song proclaiming ‘Hum Saath Saath Hain’ would have tied it all together nicely.
