Kpop Demon Hunters 2 is officially in development as Netflix’s biggest hit, premiering in 2029

KPop Demon Hunters 2 is officially in the works. The fictional K-pop girl group Hunter/X, which won over fans in the first film, is preparing for a comeback, but fans will need patience. According to Variety, Netflix and Sony Pictures Animation have finalized a deal for a sequel to Kpop Demon Hunters, aiming for a 2029 release. Animated films often take several years to produce, which explains the long timelines.

A global hit for Netflix and Sony

The original Kpop Demon Hunters, developed and produced by Sony Pictures Animation, became a worldwide success after premiering live on Netflix. As part of Sony’s licensing deal, the film streamed exclusively on the platform and became Netflix’s most-watched film to date, with over 325 million views, Deadline reports.

The adventure follows Rumi, Mira, and Zoey, members of the fictional K-pop group Hunter/X who work as demon slayers when not performing. Directed by Maggie Kang and Chris Appelhans, the film is a blend of music, action and mythology. The pair are expected to return for the sequel, although talks are still ongoing.

The director pointed towards incomplete stories

Co-director Maggie Kang has long expressed interest in further exploring the characters’ world. “We’ve prepared a lot for the possible backstory,” she told Variety in July. “There are a lot of questions left unanswered and there are areas that haven’t been explored. We had to do that because there’s only so much a movie can tell in 85 minutes.”

Streaming for box office success

Despite being available on Netflix, the film surprised many people by performing strongly in theatres. Variety reported that the streaming giant hosted sing-along fan events in August and October, where the film grossed approximately $18 million in its first two days and $5–6 million over the Halloween weekend. According to Deadline, its total domestic gross is now nearing $25 million.

Music, sales, and massive popularity

The Kpop Demon Hunters soundtrack became a chart-topping sensation. Songs such as Golden, Your Idol and Soda Pop climbed the Billboard Hot 100, with Golden reaching number 1 in August. The entire album later topped the Billboard 200 and achieved platinum status.

The popularity of the film also led to toy deals with Mattel and Hasbro, turning Kpop Demon Hunters into a full-fledged multimedia franchise.

The countdown to 2029 has started

While Netflix and Sony have not confirmed production details or a specific release date, Kpop Demon Hunters 2 is officially on the way. Hunter/X fans can look forward to more music, more action, and more monsters when the sequel arrives on Netflix in 2029.
