New Delhi: Dhanush and Aanand L Rai are back with ‘Tere Ishq Mein’, a spiritual sequel to the superhit film ‘Raanjhanaa’. The actor candidly discussed the complexities behind his two most talked-about characters, Kundan in ‘Raanjhanaa’ and his upcoming role as Shankar in ‘Tere Ishq Mein’, calling them emotionally demanding roles that require deep preparation.
Recalling how filmmaker Aanand L Rai and his co-star Kriti Sanon once told him that his face was “that of a heartbroken man”, Dhanush said he took the comment as a compliment, acknowledging how it matched Kundan’s internal struggle. “I have a big love-failure face… the face of a broken-hearted man,” he said with a laugh, adding that the role is more layered than it appears.
The actor spoke to the media about his film during a press conference in the capital, where lead actress Kriti Sanon and director Aanand L Rai were present.

Dhanush said that even though Kundan may look ordinary on the surface, it is difficult to play this character. He said, “It looks simple. Raanjhanaa especially seems simple, but it is not. It is a very complex part to play. A little bit this way or that way, you end up not liking Kundan.” He said the team had to be careful and thoughtful to ensure the audience connected with the character. “A lot of precautions, a lot of practice, homework had to be done because it’s a very difficult part to play.”

Talking about his new character in ‘Tere Ishq Mein’, Dhanush said that it is easy for the audience to like Shankar but he comes with his own emotional weight. “Shankar is very easy to like, but he has his own challenges, about which I can’t say much now. Once you watch the film, you will know the challenges he had to go through to play this role.”
The actor said he likes roles that inspire him creatively and allow him to explore new emotional dimensions. “When an actor reads the script and sees these kinds of challenges, he jumps at it. ‘Yes, this is what I was waiting for.’ I can do something. I don’t have to learn lines, go in front of the camera, say lines and come back. I have to work on it,” he said.
Dhanush said that scripts of this depth don’t come around often and the joy lies in surrendering to the process. He said, “It has nothing to do with aggression or anything. It’s just a good part with a lot of challenges.”
Talking about the strangest thing he did in the film, he said, “We shot most of the film in Delhi. So, I was styled differently at first. They gave me nice thick clothes, jackets and everything. For some reason, I didn’t feel it for Shankar. Then I told them, no, I don’t want these clothes. I don’t feel like Shankar. I just want a simple shirt. And it’s the craziest thing I’ve ever done because I I get cold very easily, so I cooled myself down in that situation.”
Rai praised Dhanush’s acting skills and shared that he surprises the director with his talent, “We approach him to be surprised. He will never be surprised. I think he has done a lot. The story reaches him, so we can take away this surprise. So we were excited to see him do those scenes. So there are no limits with him. You can challenge him to any extent. It’s fun for any writer or director. He has such a The actor is someone you can hire and fly with.”
Talking about the film, Kriti plays the character of a young woman named Mukti, who falls in love with the fiery, volatile, rule-breaking Shankar (Dhanush). But before their love can blossom, circumstances separate them. Unable to deal with the heartbreak, Dhanush’s character becomes vengeful and vows to burn down ‘the whole of Delhi’ to make up for his broken heart.
Director Aanand L Rai first revealed the project on the 10th anniversary of his 2013 romantic drama ‘Raanjhanaa’, which also starred Dhanush in the lead role.
‘Tere Ishq Mein’ is produced under the banner of Gulshan Kumar, T-Series and Color Yellow Productions. Producers include Aanand L Rai, Himanshu Sharma, Bhushan Kumar and Krishna Kumar. It will be released in theaters on 28th November.
