Prashasti Singh returns to Soho Theater with her show divine femininity, Only this time, it will be an English iteration. “Everywhere, there are so many of us. Sometimes it doesn’t matter whether I’m in London, Australia or Amsterdam, I can perform just like I do in India,” laughs Prashasti.
“Even people who attend shows with their friends or partners have all the context required for a show like mine,” says the Mumbai-based comic.
Prashasti, who debuted as a stand-up eight years ago, presented her first show blushed deeply in 2022, followed by Member of the house. he opened divine femininity Last year in London, albeit in Hindi.
“My comedy is predominantly in Hindi, but this year at the Edinburgh Fringe, I rewrote the show in English because I wanted to perform for a global audience.”
Prashasti explains that this is why many stand-up comedians participate in shows like the Edinburgh Fringe. “We take it as a challenge; people from all over the world including Asia, Europe and South America have been showcasing their talent for almost a month now and this is a chance to catch an artist you may have never heard of before. In such an environment you have to adapt; you can’t stick to the scripted ideas you’ve registered with.”
“Also, my brain works differently in Hindi and English – the nature of humor is different,” she says, adding that issues like AQI need context before foreign audiences connect with jokes. “One positive thing is that this context setting becomes fertile ground for more jokes. And if I’m talking about Amitabh or Shah Rukh, I have to explain that they are like Tom Cruise or George Clooney in our world.”

aha moment
talking about the inspiration behind divine femininityPrashasti says that this stems from the anger of most modern women. “I think like most modern women, my dream was to live life like a man; I watched my parents’ life and my father’s life definitely seemed better. Then at some point, a lot of us actually achieve that dream – we start bringing in good money and with it comes the freedom that a lot of men enjoy.”
“And then you realize, it’s not a happy place. To work with them and become powerful like them, we end up being as unhappy as they are. And in the process, we’ve also given up all the good things about being women.”
“We’ve lost our femininity, have a higher risk of heart attacks and we’re struggling with the feeling that we’ve been scammed. At the same time, the world tells us we’re crazy. The humor in this show comes from the frustration that you can’t enjoy your dream that has come true.”
Traveling for work has exposed Prashasti to “the angst of modern women”. “I understand that the struggle of a woman in urban India is very different from that of a woman working in the corporate world of London. Patriarchy is everywhere, but lived experiences vary, and while some aspects are universal, much is region specific.”
prashasti says divine femininity The debut took place in Bengaluru, and even though she has already done a few shows here, she will be bringing it back early next year.
“A lot of people miss a show, which is why most comics have multiple runs of the same performance. Also, most of us who stand, like Bengaluru as an area because it has the best combination of audiences. You can find every demographic in every show.”
