New Delhi: Veteran Malayalam actor, director and screenwriter Sreenivasan died at a private hospital on Saturday morning. He was 69 years old.
According to reports, the veteran artiste was admitted to a hospital in Thripunithura on Friday night for treatment and breathed his last on Saturday morning.
Srinivasan, a native of Kannur, had been living in Kochi for many years. Widely considered one of the most influential figures in Malayalam cinema, he played a significant role in shaping popular film production in Kerala.

Apart from acting, Sreenivasan was also a director, screenwriter, dubbing artist and producer. His career spanned almost five decades and he worked in more than 200 films. He made his acting debut in 1976 with Manimuzakkam.

Who was Srinivasan?
Born on April 6, 1956 in Pattiyam near Thalassery in the Kannur district of Kerala, Srinivasan emerged as one of the most influential voices in Malayalam cinema, known for his blend of sharp social satire with accessible storytelling. In a career spanning nearly five decades, he acted in more than 225 films and wrote several landmark screenplays.
His writing credits include acclaimed films like Odaruthammav Aalariyam, Sanmanasullavarakku Samadhanam, Gandhinagar 2nd Street, Nadodikkattu, Pathanapravesham, Varavelpu, Thalayana Manthram, Sandesam, Midhunam, Mazhayethum Munpe, Azhakiya Raavanan, Oru Maravathoor Kanavu, Udayanu Tharam, Katha Parayampol and Njan Prakashan. The latter ranking among the highest-grossing Malayalam films of all time.
His scripts were widely noted for their wit, political insight and moral clarity.
As a film producer, he scripted and directed Vadakkunokkiyanthram and Chintavishtayya Shyamala.
Vadakkunokkiyanthram won the Kerala State Film Award for Best Film, while Chinthavishtayya Shyamala received the National Film Award for Best Film on Other Social Issues and the Kerala State Film Award for Best Popular Film.
Sreenivasan has received several honors during his career, including a National Film Award, two South Filmfare Awards and six Kerala State Film Awards. He won the Kerala State Film Award for Best Screenplay for Sandesam and Mazhayetham Munpe.
A frequent collaborator of directors Priyadarshan, Sathyan Anthikad and Kamal, Sreenivasan played an important role in shaping the golden age of Malayalam comedy and social drama.
He made his acting debut in 1976 with PA Backer’s film Manimuzhakkam, followed by his first lead role in Sanghaganam (1979). He was formally trained at the Film and Television Institute of Tamil Nadu in Chennai.
Beyond cinema, Sreenivasan was also a producer and co-produced Katha Parayampol and Thattathin Marayathu with actor Mukesh under the Lumiere Film Company.
