Make no mistake, Avatar: Fire and Ash crossed the $100 million mark in day one, but given the scale of the film and its franchise history, that figure was less than expected.

Avatar: Fire and Ash made $12 million in previews ahead of its Friday release in the US. It also grossed $43 million in overseas territories such as China, where it was released before the US and the rest of the world. On Friday, the film added $25 million in North America and $57 million overseas to that tally. Its worldwide earnings on the first day reached $136.9 million. according to box office mojo And comScore, this includes a staggering $100.4 million from overseas territories. The film is projected to collect over $350 million worldwide in its opening weekend, which will fall short of the $441 million Avatar: Fire and Ash managed three years ago.
Avatar Fire and Ash lost to Zootopia 2
What’s worse for Avatar Fire and Ash is that it has failed to take the biggest opening of 2025. Zootopia 2 grossed nearly $150 million worldwide on its opening day earlier this year, on its way to a record-breaking $560 million opening, the fourth-biggest of all time. Fire and Ash now needs to bet on a strong hold on Monday, and maintain that word of mouth if it hopes to cross the $1.5 billion mark worldwide, let alone the $2 billion mark of the other two Avatar films.

Fire and Ash is the third of James Cameron’s five planned Avatar films, based on a fictional exomoon called Pandora, where the indigenous Na’vi tribe battles human colonists. Sam Worthington, Zoe Saldana, Sigourney Weaver, Stephen Lang, and Kate Winslet reprise their roles from the previous films, while Oona Chaplin joins as a new antagonist.
