Just days after her sister Sharda Iyer died in a trekking accident in Oman’s Jebel Shams region, renowned playback singer and actor Chitra Iyer shared an emotional tribute on social media. In her post, Chitra expressed the depth of her grief in a light-hearted, brother-sister-like tone. “Run along, you courageous little banshee of a sister! You run too fast! But I’ll catch up… eventually… soon, I promise. I love you, you insufferable monster. You’re charming. You’re sexy thang! What am I going to do? How can I live without your annoying voice constantly on the other end of the phone? Or yelling from the next room?? Or just… being annoying. Being a brat. Being you,” she wrote.

Chitra’s daughter, actor Anjali Sivaraman, known for Bad Girl (2025), also paid tribute to her aunt on Instagram. Anjali wrote, “Shaya Chitti… I can’t begin to express the sadness I’m feeling. It feels like there’s an emptiness, like something is missing, and the world isn’t right anymore. You were not just our aunt, but our mother, our friend, our biggest supporter, our biggest cheerleader. You were love, light, and life. You lived life to the fullest, right up to the last moment.”

She added, “We made a lot of plans. We had so much left to do, so many memories left to make, so many laughs left to have. I can’t imagine never being able to talk to you again. My heart is broken forever. I love you so much. You will always be in my heart, and I will always have you with me. I love you more than words can say. I miss you.”

Sharda, a 55-year-old Indian expatriate living in Muscat, was trekking with friends in the rugged Jebel Shams area on Friday, January 2, when the accident occurred, according to Gulf News. No further information has been released about the incident. Sharda, originally from Thazhava, Karunagappally, Kerala, previously worked as a manager at Oman Air.

The family’s recent loss deepens the tragedy

Chitra and Sharda are the daughters of late agricultural scientist Dr. RD Iyer and Dr. Rohini Iyer. This is the second tragedy to hit the family in less than a month, after the death of RD Iyer on December 11, 2025. Sharda had traveled to India for her father’s funeral and returned to Oman on December 24. His remains are being flown to Kerala, with the last rites to be performed at the family home in Thazhava on Wednesday, January 7.

Widely recognized for her collaboration with Oscar-winning composer AR Rahman, Chitra Iyer has sung many songs in Malayalam and Tamil and has appeared in several films and television serials. His most recent work includes the segment Vilpana in the anthology streaming series Manorathangal.
