Jackie Shroff backs big-screen experience, calls Dhurandhar proof that theaters are still thriving amid rise of OTT

Mumbai: Jackie Shroff expressed his love for cinemas, saying he still prefers watching movies on the big screen rather than OTT (over-the-top) platforms.

In an interview with ANI, Jackie Shroff reflected on the decline in viewership in theaters due to limited seating capacity on the big screens. However, the actor also highlighted the existence of iconic theaters in India, which reflects cinemagoers’ ever-present love for the big screen.

Jackie Shroff said, “Theatres have become a game of bricks and mortar. They are building small buildings. They have reduced the seating capacity in theaters from 1000 seats to 200 and the rest is being used in malls. Maratha Temple is still there. Regal is still there. Eros is still there. Maratha Temple is the biggest example of this. It is a respectable cinema hall in Maharashtra. Small theaters are coming. Have started.”

However, the ‘Hero’ actor stressed that both the platforms have their own merits and people prefer them as per their needs.

Jackie Shroff said, “What has happened with OTT? A lot of things have started being watched, good and bad. You are sitting at home and watching a film. But watching a film on a big screen is one thing and OTT is different.”

Reflecting on the low footfall in theaters for most films in recent years, Jackie Shroff said that these trends have continued since the 1990s. He based his argument on the recent success of ‘Dhurandhar’, which has created records in Bollywood, and is still running in theaters more than a month after its release.

Jackie Shroff said, “At that time, only 3 out of 10 films would run (in theatres). At that time, all 10 out of 10 films would not run. We have also gone through the same phase. If Rangeela had been shown on the big screen, no other film would have run. 3 out of 10 films would run and a maximum of 4 films would run. The same trend is still there. Out of 10 films, only three would run,” Jackie Shroff said. Said.

Jackie Shroff said, “Now things have opened up. The exposure is more. People are making their own films, but the craze of the film is the same, which Dhurandhar has proved. You can have it anywhere. On OTT or anywhere else. Dhurandhar will remain Dhurandhar. Beast will remain Beast. People still go to theaters and scream and dance.”

On the work front, Jackie Shroff was recently seen in ‘Tu Meri Main Tera Main Tera Tu Meri’ alongside Kartik Aryan and Ananya Panday.

‘Tu Meri Main Tera, Main Tera Tu Meri’ is presented by Dharma Productions and Namah Pictures, and produced by Karan Johar, Adar Poonawala, Apoorva Mehta, Shareen Mantri Kedia and Kishore Arora.
Apart from Karthik and Ananya, the film also stars Neena Gupta. The film was released in theaters on December 25, 2025.
