New Delhi: As the legal battle over Sanjay Kapoor’s estate continues, his mother Rani Kapoor has approached the Delhi High Court, alleging that her daughter-in-law Priya Kapoor used a fraudulent trust to divert family assets.
According to an ANI report, Rani Kapoor has alleged that Priya Kapoor, along with other family members, illegally controlled her entire wealth, family inheritance and stake in Sona Group’s key companies through fraudulent trusts.
In a detailed civil suit, Rani Kapoor has sought a declaration that the “RK Family Trust/Rani Kapoor Family Trust” allegedly created through a trust deed dated October 26, 2017, is illegal, void and the result of fraud, forgery and undue influence.

“It is submitted that through a complex web of illegal transactions carried out in unfortunate connivance with the plaintiff’s (Rani Kapoor) son, Sanjay Kapoor, the entire assets of the plaintiff came to be vested in a fraudulent trust named ‘RK Family Trust’ without her knowledge. The entire fraud perpetrated on the plaintiff has now come to light after the death of her son, who also died under mysterious circumstances,” the suit said.
Rani Kapoor has also sought relief including dissolution of the trust, restitution of assets, rendering of accounts and a permanent injunction restraining the defendants from acting on or benefiting from the disputed trust.
According to the lawsuit, Rani Kapoor is the sole beneficiary and heiress of the entire estate of her late husband, Sona Group founder and promoter Surinder Kapoor, who died in June 2015.
The suit filed in the Delhi High Court claims that after Rani Kapoor suffered a stroke in 2017, Sanjay Kapoor and his third wife Priya Sachdev Kapoor took advantage of her physical dependence and trust and hatched a complex scheme to transfer all her assets to the RK Family Trust without her consent, a Bar & Bench report said.
Meanwhile, Priya Kapoor has filed a criminal defamation case against her late husband’s sister Mandira Kapoor Smith. His statement has been recorded in Patiala House Court.
Priya Kapoor has alleged that a series of statements made against her on podcasts, social media platforms, media interviews and republished online material constitute a sustained and deliberate campaign to damage her reputation.
Sanjay Kapoor died on June 12 last year at the age of 53 while playing polo in London. While the cause of death was reported to be cardiac arrest, there were reports that he suffered anaphylactic shock after a bee flew into his mouth.
