At The Square Inch, a one-stop destination for needlecraft enthusiasts since 2014, Tina Katwal and Varsha Sundararajan, co-founders of the Quilt India Foundation, are preparing for their annual thematic quilt exhibition. This year’s showcase featured 58 entries from participants ranging in age from eight to 80. Located in Thiruvanmiyur, the center is known for its exclusive quilts and regular quilt making workshops.
“This year, the entries were evaluated by Chennai-based textile designer Prabha Narasimhan, and the winners will be announced at the exhibition, which will open on January 23,” says Tina. Participants were given a bundle of eight different colored clothes and 12 weeks to complete their task. Varsha explains, “Each quilt had to measure 20 x 20 inches and use at least 50% of the provided fabric. Unified by the theme Reflect, the works explored reflection in its many forms, optical, emotional, psychological and social, providing viewers with a rich and contemplative experience.”

The highlight of the exhibition is the display of Double Wedding Ring quilt and Rolling Waves quilt, which are shown for the first time in India. While the first is based on the symbolism of love and unity, the second has the illusion of fluid motion, made entirely of straight-edged fabric pieces. As visitors move through the exhibition they will encounter a range of emotions and artistic approaches, each quilt distinct with its own pattern, mood and interpretation.
Varsha says, “The objective behind this exhibition is to create awareness, inspire and educate the public about quilt making as an art. It is interesting to see the consistency and individuality with which the artists have approached the subject.” She adds that quilt making is a meditative practice and is an extremely peaceful and fulfilling experience for its practitioners.
After the four-day exhibition, the quilts will go to other art quilt shows in India and abroad. Visitors can also browse and purchase a variety of quilted products including bags, laptop cases, tote bags, blankets and table runners.
