Last month, Zubeen Garg’s family had written a letter to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, urging the formation of a special court, speedy trial in Assam and appropriate diplomatic-legal intervention in Singapore after his death on September 19, 2025.

In the letter, the family described Garg as “not only a member of our family, but a cultural voice of Assam and the north-east of India”, and said his sudden demise has left a grieving family and millions of followers demanding clarity on the circumstances of his death.

Zubeen Garg’s wife Garima Garg shared the letter on her official handle, which reads, “Respected Sir, We, the family of late Zubeen Garg, humbly place this memorandum before you with confidence in the constitutional authority of your office and the commitment of the Government of India to justice, dignity and the rule of law. Zubeen Garg was not only a member of our family, but he was also a cultural voice of Assam and the North-East of India.”

According to a report by Lydia Lam at Channel NewsAsia (CNA), the coroner’s court was told that Garg, who died in Singapore in September last year, was “severely intoxicated” and drowned in the waters off Lazarus Island after wearing a life jacket.

According to news reports, the chief investigating officer told the court at the beginning of the questioning that the 52-year-old iconic singer was at a yacht party on September 19, 2025 and he initially wore a life jacket, but later removed it and refused to wear the second life jacket given to him later.

The report states that at the time of the incident, he was “highly intoxicated”, and several witnesses saw him attempting to swim back to the boat, before he became disoriented and began floating face down in the water.
