The Bluff Movie Review: Priyanka Chopra’s Strong Action, But Weak Story Undermines Thrills

After making her mark in Hollywood, Priyanka Chopra has proved one thing – she doesn’t like to repeat herself. After the espionage of ‘Citadel’ and the romance of ‘Love Again’, he has now ventured into the bloody world of 19th century Caribbean pirates with ‘The Bluff’. Is this movie right for your weekend release on Prime Video? Let’s find out.

Story: Shadows of the past and revenge

The story of ‘The Bluff’ is based on the backdrop of the 19th century Caribbean islands. Priyanka Chopra plays the role of a woman whose past is full of bloodshed from piracy. Now she is trying to live a calm and stable life with her child. But an old enemy (Karl Urban) resurfaces and Priyanka must return to the path she left behind to protect her family. It is basically a revenge story, which tries to bridge the emotional bond between mother and child.

The film is essentially a revenge story, with layers of period elements and scale. It aims high in terms of mood and setting, but the writing doesn’t always dig deep, often staying superficial when you expect it to go further. Only Priyanka and Karl Urban are keeping it together.

Bluff: In short

Basically, The Bluff is based on a character-driven story. The story focuses on the personal stakes, relationships and decisions that shape its lead’s journey. It tries to build tension through emotional beats and action, though not consistently.

The pacing seems measured, and the way the story is told is fairly simple. It doesn’t make things too difficult, but at the same time, it doesn’t always push the limits. The film relies on its central idea and the actors to carry it forward.

The Bluff: Priyanka Chopra’s performance and other actors

This film is handled by Priyanka Chopra. There’s a sense of control in her performance – she’s powerful, she’s passionate and doesn’t overdo things, and that control works in her favor. She brings a certain weight to the character, both in quiet moments and in action-packed moments.

Karl Urban who plays the dangerous villain in the film is very good. But his greatness and ability to fully express himself in the film is somewhat diminished by a thin screenplay.

The supporting cast did what was required. They fit into the story without being out of focus, although there isn’t enough room for all the characters to fully stand out. Nevertheless, the overall performance remains consistent and grounded.

Bluff: What worked

Bluff’s greatest strength is its tone. It stayed committed to the pirate world it tried to create and didn’t try to be anything else in between.

Priyanka Chopra’s presence provides stability, and the film benefits from her ability to deliver emotional scenes without forcing them.

Bluff: What doesn’t work

Where the film struggles is in its pacing and impact. At times, it feels a bit slow, especially when the story doesn’t progress as expected.

Some parts could have been written more tightly to maintain engagement. The supporting characters, while decent, don’t always show enough depth to leave a deep impression.

It also keeps things a little safe – you keep waiting for that moment to really surprise you, but that moment never comes.

Bluff: Final decision

Bluff is a steady, performance-driven film that serves more than the whole in its parts. She is genuine and controlled, and Priyanka Chopra is her strongest point.

It may not make much of an impact, but it draws your attention to the fact that it is a
