When a film portrays the complexities of human relationships with simplicity on screen, it directly captures the hearts of the audience. ‘Dadi Ki Shaadi’, released in theaters today, is a sensitive film that not only entertains but also attacks the stereotypes of the society. Releasing in theaters today, May 8, the film not only entertains but also initiates an important conversation about loneliness and the aspirations of the elderly in our society. The highlight of the film is the coming together of three generations of the Kapoor family and the much-awaited debut of Riddhima Kapoor Sahni.
Story: When Grandma decided to remarry
The film opens in the beautiful and tranquil valleys of Shimla, where Vimla Ahuja (Neetu Kapoor) is spending time alone in her luxurious bungalow. The story takes a turn when Vimala announces her second marriage on social media. The news is nothing less than a shock to his sons and daughter Sunaina (Riddhima Kapoor Sahni).

Meanwhile, Vimala’s granddaughter Kanika (Sadia Khatib) is getting engaged to Tony Kalra (Kapil Sharma), a boy from a typical Punjabi family in Delhi. As word of Vimala’s marriage comes to light, the engagement is called off and the entire family storms Shimla to ‘stop’ Vimala. This is where retired colonel Theeran Devarajan (R. Sarathkumar), who is going to be Vimala’s life partner, enters. After this begins an exciting journey of emotions, comedy and drama.
Grandmother’s Wedding: Direction and Screenplay
Ashish R Mohan has chosen a very bold and sensitive subject. Elderly remarriage is still considered a taboo subject in our society, but the director has presented it very simply without any hype. The first half of the film is very powerful. The clash between a rowdy Punjabi family and a calm and disciplined South Indian man (Colonel Thiran) creates a perfect mix of comedy and drama on screen. However, the length of the film (two and a half hours) seems a bit long. After the interval, the story seems to repeat the same sentiments at some places, due to which the pace slows down a bit. Yet the director’s sincerity is commendable; He did not play with emotions and kept the story grounded. The length of the film could have been shortened. The pace of the film slows down in the second half.

‘Grandma marriage’ leaves an important question: Does a person no longer need a partner after a certain age? The film conveys the message that the elderly not only need to take care of their children and grandchildren, but also need mental and emotional support. The length of the film could have been a little shorter. The pace of the film slows down in the second half.
‘Grandma’s Wedding’: Acting
Neetu Kapoor is the life of this film. She plays the character of Vimala with such tenderness and depth that you can feel her loneliness even in her silence. The sadness hidden behind his smile and passion to live life on his own terms gives the film an emotional underpinning. Kapil Sharma has emerged as a pleasant surprise in this film. He has given a very restrained and serious performance, moving away from his familiar comedy image. In the role of Tony, he has proved that he is not only adept at making people laugh, but his acting is excellent in emotional scenes as well. Sadia Khatib comes to life in the film with her freshness, while R. Sarathkumar shows a unique dominance and majesty in the character of the colonel.
Riddhima Kapoor Sahni has shown a confident spirit in her acting debut. She played the role of a daughter who lives abroad and stands by her family during difficult times. Their presence on screen feels very natural, and they never look out of place. Meanwhile, Samara Sahni, the youngest member of the Kapoor family, won everyone’s heart with her small role and her acting in the song ‘Santi’. Seeing the three generations (Neetu, Riddhima and Samara) together in the same frame felt like a historic moment. The film reflects the power that the women of the Kapoor family have given to cinema over the decades.
‘Grandmother’s Marriage’: Technical Aspects
The dialogues of the film are very realistic. It doesn’t seem like a movie drama, rather it sounds like a conversation taking place in your own home. Its humor is very natural and arises from the bickering of the characters. Talking about the music, the songs support the mood of the film. ‘Santi’ is a fun track, while ‘Suno Na Dil’ is a heart touching song. The background score helps maintain the emotional tone of the film without overpowering it.
‘Dadi Ki Shaadi’ is a movie that you can watch with your entire family. It will make you laugh, cry a little, and ultimately leave a smile on your face. If you are looking for a clean, meaningful and heartwarming family film, this is a great choice. Overall, ‘Dadi Ki Shaadi’ is a breath of fresh air that breaks the old mold.
With a 3.5 rating, this film is a must watch for its simplicity and honesty.
