Global star Shakira has moved on after her split from footballer Gerard Pique, but she hasn’t forgotten the pain she suffered during the process. Speaking about the separation, which he described as the darkest time of his life, the Grammy-winning artist said, “The pain I felt was probably the greatest I’ve felt in my entire life, and it stopped me from working at times.”
“It felt like someone had put a hole in my chest. And the feeling was so real, almost physical. I physically felt like there was a hole in my chest and people could see through me,” he said.
Previously, Shakira has revealed personal turmoil through her music and said in a 2023 interview with People en Español that Gerard “cheated” on her while her father was in the ICU recovering from a tragic fall. Gerard also allegedly cheated on Shakira with current girlfriend Clara Chia Martí.
When it comes to music, she expressed her pain in her 2023 breakup anthem, Bzrp Music Sessions, Volume 53. Now, looking back, Shakira says it has been a “journey to myself and getting there through my music.”
She said she is going through a phase when the worst is over and the process has given her a new sense of autonomy and independence.

Shakira and Gerard met in 2010 and were together for over a decade, but never married. They have two sons together – nine-year-old Milan and seven-year-old Sasha. In June 2022, Shakira and Gerard announced their separation in a joint statement. It read, “We regret to confirm that we are separating. We ask for privacy at this time for the well-being of our children, who are our top priority. Thank you in advance for your understanding and respect.”
Last year, Gerard officially started dating Clara Chia Martí on Instagram. The two reportedly began dating while he was still with Shakira.
