International Yoga Day 2024: Date, History, Significance and Theme – Everything you need to know

International Yoga Day is celebrated every year on January 21 and aims to raise awareness about the ancient practice of yoga and the various health benefits it offers – physical and mental health. Although India is the birthplace of yoga, its popularity has crossed national boundaries and barriers of class and religion. Due to the immense health benefits of yoga, doctors have also recommended this physical activity for managing several health conditions like obesity, hypertension and diabetes. The theme this year is Yoga for Self and Society.

International Yoga Day 2024: History

On 27 September 2014, Prime Minister of India Narendra Modi proposed an International Yoga Day while addressing the United Nations General Assembly. In his address at the opening of the 69th session of the General Assembly, Prime Minister Narendra Modi said: “Yoga is an invaluable gift of our ancient tradition. Yoga symbolizes the unity of mind and body, thought and action … a holistic approach [that] It is so valuable for our health and our well-being. Yoga is not just exercise; it is a way to find a sense of unity with yourself, the world and nature.”

International Yoga Day 2024: Significance

International Yoga Day aims to increase people’s understanding of the myriad benefits of yoga and encourage people to adopt a healthy lifestyle.
