‘A Quiet Place’ prequel is saying a lot at the box office, as Costner’s Western gets off to a poor start

A Quiet Place: Day One is making a splash at the box office. The prequel grossed an estimated $53 million in its first weekend in North American theaters, according to studio estimates on Sunday.

It is a franchise-best and far exceeded expectations. Over the weekend, pre-release tracking showed First Day It was projected for an opening gross of $40 million, but audiences were apparently more excited to see the action-horror starring Lupita Nyong’o and Joseph Quinn and released by Paramount. The same can’t be said for Kevin Costner’s film Horizon: An American Saga – Chapter 1Its initial gross was $11 million.

There’s little chance that locations will switch when the actual release happens on Monday. Either way, this is good news for movie theaters in a summer season that’s finally heating up but still trails far behind last year (a 19% drop) and pre-pandemic norms (a 36% drop from 2019).

In just three weeks of release, it earned nearly $470 million in North America and $545.5 million internationally, bringing its global total to $1.01 billion. The sequel is the only film released in 2024 to cross the billion dollar mark, and it did so in just 19 days, a record for an animated film.

“The film’s tremendous global success once again demonstrates that audiences around the world will be drawn to engaging, entertaining films and will want to enjoy them on the big screen,” Michael O’Leary, president and CEO of the National Association of Theatre Owners, said in a statement.

A Quiet Place: Day OneThe film, directed by Michael Sarnoski and rated PG-13, is also fast approaching a critical milestone. The $67 million production has already earned $98.5 million, including $45.5 million from international showings in 59 markets.

“It’s one of those rare horror franchises that has generated incredible goodwill among both audiences and critics,” said Paul Dergarabedian, senior media analyst at Comscore.

Playing on 3,708 screens in the United States and Canada, approximately 40% of the film’s domestic gross came from “premium screens”, including IMAX and other large formats. It entered the market to mostly positive reviews (84% on Rotten Tomatoes); audiences gave it a B+ CinemaScore and four out of five stars on PostTrak.

“We’ve put together an attractive package, but I think it shows that people want to see movies,” Aronson said. “The market really works when there are choices and there’s something for everyone.”

beginning HorizonMeanwhile, the film has been slow to take off. While older audiences, who are most likely to support Western epics, typically haven’t turned out to see the film on opening weekend the way people often go to the movies for horror and superheroes, the road ahead won’t be easy: reviews haven’t been great, and it received a disappointing B- CinemaScore.

“If you can’t find something you like at the multiplex right now, you’re not trying hard enough,” Dergarabedian said.
