Aja Ekadashi is one of the most spiritually important monogamics in the Hindu calendar. Dedicated to Lord Vishnu, it is believed that seeing this fast not only removes the sins of previous life, but also paves towards liberation (salvation).

By participating in Aja Ekadashi rituals, devotees want blessings to fulfill happiness, prosperity and worldly desires. The importance of this Ekadashi has been exposed in the scriptures, where Lord Krishna explains to Arjuna that this day destroys all previous sins and gives up spiritual abilities equivalent to the performance of great yagyas.

History and fast story

The story behind Aja Ekadashi lies deeply in the Purana legends:

King Harishchandra was famous for his truth and nobility, lost everything due to a divine test. In complete disappointment, he met the sage Gautama, who advised him to fast.

All the pain of the king ended miraculously, with overnight prayers (awareness). He again joined his family, returned his kingdom, and blessed by the gods, eventually getting a place in heaven.

Rituals and worship methods

Aja Ekadashi involves observing:

Fasting: Devotees avoid grains, rice, beans and some vegetables, only light, sattvic food like fruits and milk.

Prayer: After bathing in the morning, the devotees worshiped Lord Vishnu with offerings of flowers, incense, lamps and basil leaves. Special prayers and texts of Vishnu Sahasranama are common.

Awareness: Many people wake up all night, sing bhajans and listen to Aaja Ekadashi fast story.

Donation: Donation of food and clothes to the needy is considered particularly beneficial.

Passage: After offering prayers and feeding the poor, fasting breaks the next day (duality).
