Mumbai: Aamir Khan, who is set to release his game play ‘Sitare Zameen Paar’ on YouTube films, shared the reason for leaving the popular OTT platforms and deciding to go directly to YouTube instead.
The film will be available on YouTube films from August 1, which is on demand at an accessible price, will leave other digital platforms completely. Its price will be Rs 100 in India and will be available in 38 other countries including the US, UK and Australia, along with prices according to local markets.
During a press conference in Mumbai on Tuesday, Aamir said that his aim was to make the film cheap and accessible for more and more people.
Aamir shared, “Think about it. If a family of four sees the film for 100 rupees, it is only 25 rupees per person. You can also invite your neighbors. When I was younger, I used to watch movies with neighbors. If you see it with eight people, it’s also cheap. You can show it for the entire village, 100 rupees for 100 people.”
He said, “It is up to you how you want to use it. But our effort is to reach every corner of India and ensure benefits to everyone. This is a big step for us.”
The film will leave all other digital streaming platforms and will directly go on the demand for YouTube films.
Aamir spoke openly why he did not choose to follow the OTT route like many other filmmakers. He shared that he “never liked” the traditional OTT model and wanted to try something different that would reach more people at low cost.
“Many journalists have asked me why I did not go to OTT,” Aamir said. “At that time, I could not explain it clearly. But the reason for this is that I have never liked that model. I have never understood it. So I have come with this new model. I hope you will like it. I hope every citizen of the country will appreciate it. I believe that cinema, which will grow once again, will be high again.”
The release will feature subtitle and dubbed versions in many languages to fulfill the wider audience.
Speaking about Sitare Zamin Paar, this blockbuster film Taare is the sequel to Zameen Paar. In this sports drama, Aamir Khan plays the role of a basketball coach that has tasked to train a group of neurodivargent children. The film also stars Jenalia Deshmukh. Directed by Prasanna, it hit theaters on 20 June.
