Aamir Khan’s son Junaid Khan’s debut film Maharaj gets clean chit from Gujarat High Court, relief to producers

Ahmedabad: The Gujarat High Court on Friday lifted the temporary stay on the release of Aamir Khan’s son Junaid Khan’s debut film ‘Maharaj’.

Following this decision, the filmmakers expressed their gratitude on Instagram.

The post read, “We are grateful to the judiciary for allowing the release of the film titled Maharaj. The film is based on the biography of Karsandas Mulji, one of the most important social reformers of our country.”

“Yash Raj Films has a 50-year-old legacy of promoting India, its stories, its people, culture and heritage. We have never made a film that has tarnished the reputation of our country or our countrymen,” the post said.

The court ruled that the film, based on events related to the 1862 Maharaja defamation case, was not intended to hurt the sentiments of any community.

Some members of the Pushti Marg sect had filed a petition against its release on Netflix, claiming that it would hurt religious sentiments.

After the hearing, Shailesh Patwari, one of the petitioners, said, “This hearing was going on for a few days and the judge did not find anything objectionable in this film. We accept the decision of the High Court because the High Court judge has approved it. We do not need any other proof apart from this.”

‘Maharaj’, which focuses on the 1862 defamation case involving Vaishnav religious leader and social reformer Karsandas Mulji, is currently streaming on Netflix.
