Abhijeet Bhattacharya said he was ‘insulted’ when Shah Rukh Khan won an award for his film Yes Boss.

Singer Abhijeet Bhattacharya opens up about the early days of his career and how music directors used to make him feel humiliated. In conversation with PinkvillaAbhijeet shared an incident when music directors did not give him a “chance to sing” when he got a Shah Rukh Khan film. He also recalled that after he won awards for Yes Boss, many music directors told him that they would not choose him to sing for their tracks. Abhijeet remembers being insulted by music directors

Abhijeet was asked if he has ever been criticised in a way that made him feel humiliated but also inspired. Talking about being a ‘victim of industry politics’, he said, “It has happened to me a lot… in which it used to happen that, as soon as the music director felt that he had got a Shah Rukh Khan film… he became so close to me. That music director, it seemed that his only motive was to not let Abhijeet sing. I was so close to him.”

He also said, “When I got the award, and none of the films were huge blockbusters, yes boss, the song was also not a blockbuster, but at that time there was a non-blockbuster in between all the blockbusters, Border, Pardes, Dil To Pagal Hai. And here I got it… and so many music directors liked it… after that they tell me that they won’t let you sing the song.

Abhijeet sang four songs of Yes Boss

Yes Boss is a 1997 Indian romantic comedy film directed by Aziz Mirza. It stars Shah Rukh Khan, Juhi Chawla and Aditya Pancholi in the lead roles. The music of the film is composed by Jatin-Lalit and the lyrics are written by Javed Akhtar.

Out of the six songs in the film, Abhijeet sang four songs – Main koi aisa geet gaaun, Chand taare, Suniye toh and Jaata hai tu kahan. He won his first Filmfare Award for Best Male Playback Singer for the song ‘Main koi aisa geet gaaun’.
