Actor Wendell Pierce opens up about ‘disgusting’ racist encounter when his housing application was rejected: ‘Bigots are real’

Renowned actor Wendell Pierce has been in the news not only for his acting on screen but also for his outspoken stance on social issues. Pierce took to social media to share poignant incidents of racial discrimination, particularly his personal experience of being denied an apartment in Harlem due to his race. His revelations shed light on the pervasive nature of bigotry, prompting reflection and action.

Wendell Pierce remembers being refused an apartment in Harlem because of racial discrimination

Narrating one such incident, the 60-year-old actor claimed that a white owner refused to rent him an apartment in Harlem, as reported by NYPost. He spoke about the incident in one of his recent posts, in which he wrote, “Despite my proof of employment, bank statements, and real estate holdings, a white apartment owner rejected my application to rent an apartment… in Harlem, of all places.”

In her post on X, she further explained, “Racism and bigotry are real. There are people who would do anything to destroy the journey of Black people’s lives. When you deny our personal experiences, you are that vile and hateful.”

Pierce’s two opinions on a US federal court ruling against a black-owned capitalist firm

The following Tuesday, in another post, Pierce also spoke out about a US federal court ruling against allowing a Black-owned venture capitalist firm to award grants only to Black female entrepreneurs.

“While I appreciate the response to my personal experience with discrimination in housing, I only mentioned it as an example of the insidious nature of bigotry,” the Suits star wrote in the post. He added, “This court’s decision is deeply disturbing and damaging. A call to action.”

In a separate post, he wrote, “This law was designed to protect former slaves from discrimination.” The actor added, “Affirmative action opponent Edward Blum has argued that its text means that race cannot be considered at all in contractual relationships. Private funding is blocked by the courts. Not by tax dollars.”
