New Delhi: Bollywood superstar Akshay Kumar said on Thursday that he wants to bring untold stories of valor from India including Punjab to the big screen, as he believes that history books are mostly written from the perspective of the British.
The latest film of the actor is “Kesari Chapter 2”, which delays an untold story of Jaliyanwala Bagh massacre. The film is the second part in the “Kesari” franchise which began with the 2019 film “Kesari”, which revolted around the Battle of Sargari in 1897.
“The people of Punjab are all very brave, loyal and full of valor. And I want to bring their stories to everyone. I want to make ‘Kesari 3 and 4’. There are many chapters in Punjab and all over India … I want to bring Velor out, who do India.
Akshay said at the trailer launch event of “Kesari Chapter 2” here, “I have done it before because our history books are written according to the British. And I want to bring real history to people.”
Produced by Karan Johar’s Dharma Productions, the film narrates the true story of lawyer C Shankaran Nair, who fought a legal battle against the British Empire in the 1920s.
The film is based on Nair’s great grandson Raghu Palat and his wife Pushpa Palat’s book “The Case the case the employees”.
It gives details of the 1924 defamation test in which former Punjab’s former Lieutenant Governor Michael O’Dwire and Jallianwala Bagh massacre sued Nair, who had criticized British atrocities in Punjab in his book. Akshay said that he had no information about the case in front of Raghu Palat’s book.
“The book tells us so much that this happened, which we do not know about. In history books, we read that there was a firing and General O’Dire said that he stopped only because the bullets were finished.
“But more deeply, we never knew about it. We never knew about the matter that went ahead. Shankaran Nair fought the matter … Let me tell you one thing, Shankaran Nair defeated his white judge in his court. And it was the only case under his rule that we won. It was a big thing for us.” The 57 -year -old actor said that he feels a personal relationship with “Kesari Chapter 2”.
“This is a very important film. My father was born only in front of Jalianwala Bagh. There is a road called Katra Ahluwalia and was born there. And my grandfather also saw all this.
“We removed this film from anger because I heard the stories of that incident. My father told me, my grandfather told me,” he said.
“Kesari Chapter 2”, which is scheduled to release in theaters on 18 April, is first directed by filmmaker Karan Singh Tyagi. It also stars R Madhavan and Ananya Pandey.
Johar said that Jalianwala Bagh massacre was a dark chapter in history.
“We are releasing this film in the same month in memory of the life that were lost, wounds that are still raw and sorrows that still attach Jalianwala Bagh.
He said, “It is still a film that asks the British Empire for apology through the brave story of Shankaran Nair … The film is about the fight fought by Shankaran Nair vs The Crown.”
Pandey, who plays the role of young lawyer Dileit Gill in the film, said the character resonated with him.
“Every film that I have, I have pieces in it … I tried to channel that raw nervous energy of an upcoming lawyer … She is the only female lawyer among so many men. So that she was trying to start her own experience to start her career while fighting that case.
The actor said that his knowledge about the massacre was also very limited and there were many incredible moments during making.
“I had heard a lot of stories from my grandmother. I had heard a lot of stories about partition because my grandfather was separated from my father in partition …
“I remember when the statement happened, I was constantly asking, ‘Was it really happened?” I was surprised that a lot happened and we do not know even one percent of it.
Madhavan acted as a British lawyer Neville McKinley and said that the Jalianwala Bagh massacre was a massacre.
“I felt it was a story that needed to tell. I don’t think about whether it is positive or negative. I just want to express the truth, even if it is harsh … when I know when I know I have been successful in my career,” he said.
“Kesari Chapter 2” is written by Karan Singh Tyagi and Amritpal Singh Bindra. It is presented by Dharma Production, Kumar’s Cape of Good Films and Leo Media Collective.
