In November, Alec Baldwin’s Rust will premiere at Poland’s 2024 Camerimage Film Festival. The film team will also hold a panel discussion there.
Joel Souza’s western Rust will premiere at Poland’s Camerimage Film Festival in November. Rust will premiere in Poland
deadline The report adds that in addition to debuting the film at the film festival, director Joel, cinematographer Bianca Cline and Helena’s mentor Stephen Lighthill will lead a panel discussion following the screening. They will discuss how they continued making films after Helena’s death, the role of women in cinematography, and safety on film sets.
Helena is said to have lobbied during the film’s production to have it screened at Poland’s Camerimage, a festival honoring cinematographers. The report adds that it is unclear whether Alec will attend the screening of the film or not. The film festival will run from 16-23 November. Rust tells the story of a 13-year-old boy who is left to fend for himself and his brother after the death of his parents in the 1880s.
Internet reacts
Given that one person died and director Joel was injured due to Alec accidentally firing the prop gun, the Internet finds it ‘outrageous’ that they are still releasing the film. “I can’t believe they still made it,” one person wrote on Instagram. Another wrote, “Releasing this movie is incredibly insulting.” “It’s an absolute miracle that this film is getting released,” one person said. Very sad to hear what happened during production. But I will be very cautious and optimistic about this film.
Some people also commented that watching the film would send the message that one can ‘grossly violate safety protocols on set, even if it results in the loss of lives.’ Not everyone thought it was ‘disrespectful’ to release this film. “I don’t think releasing this is actually disrespectful,” one person commented. A fan argued, “She worked hard on this and put her talent into it. And he died tragically doing what he loved. Not releasing it would be ruining his last work, making his death even more meaningless.
What happened
In October 2021, a live round was fired from the Colt 45 gun owned by Alec during a rehearsal. It was pointed at Halina, resulting in her death and Joel being seriously injured. Alec insists that he did not pull the trigger and that it went off on its own. In August this year he was acquitted of involuntary manslaughter after it was ruled that key evidence had been mishandled. The film’s arsenal Hannah Gutierrez-Reed is serving an 18-month prison sentence for involuntary manslaughter.
