‘Alien: Romulus’ reinvigorates the violence in the ‘Alien’ franchise

SAN DIEGO, — “Pacific Rim Uprising” actor Cailee Spaeny had to admit that things got frustrating during the filming of the Disney movie “Alien: Romulus,” the latest installment of the popular “Alien” franchise, as characters were regularly killed off.

Spaeny said, “Oh, it was always very sad when somebody died. Because we shot it chronologically. I think we were all getting very attached to each other.”

“So, whenever there was a death, it was a very emotional day,” said Spaeny, who plays main character Ren Carradine.

“Alien: Romulus,” which hits U.S. theaters Aug. 16, is an independent film that takes place between the events of the 1979 “Alien” film and the 1986 “Aliens” film.

This science-fiction horror film follows a group of young ragpickers who enter an abandoned space station in search of valuable items.

However, instead of finding anything profitable, they are hunted and attacked by the ruthless Xenomorphs, the famous dark antagonist aliens within the “Alien” franchise.

Box Office Pro estimates that “Alien: Romulus” will open to between $35 million and $50 million.

“Romulus” director and writer Fede Alvarez worked hard to make the aliens in the film appear as realistic as possible.

“When it comes to the Xenomorphs, when you’re face-to-face, you know nothing is more important than practicality,” Álvarez said of convincing outsiders.

British actor Archie Renaux, who plays a garbage collector named Tyler, also believes it was important to have quality aliens in the film.

He said, “These animatronics are amazing. The teeth and gums can be seen moving and breaking.”

Luckily, the cast wasn’t completely intimidated by the alien animatronics and costumes, as the reality of filming a fantasy movie was always present.

“Eventually, you know, you spend enough time around them, you start to see them having coffee,” said Isabella Merced, who plays cleaner Kay.
