In an attempt to address a subject often ignored by the Kannada media, playwright and director Karthik Hebbar has created a thought-provoking play. Amma Mathu Suhail (My mother and Suhail). Produced by Dhimahi Centre of Arts, the play aims to spread the message of mutual understanding.

“I wanted to create a story that made me feel – something that future college-going Karthiks could connect with,” says Karthik.

Originally written in Kannada with English subtitles, the play traces the life of a queer, interfaith couple grappling with microaggressions arising from their diversity. Through a musical journey filled with humour, drama, laughter and tears, the play highlights both the beauty and challenges of their relationship.

Bringing a certain emotional depth to his performances, Hebbar sings the songs live, and uses music composed by various composers such as Jagjit Singh and Amir Khusro as well as some self-composed music to convey his message.

The narrative highlights issues of homophobia and Islamophobia, leaving the audience in an introspective mood. “I saw the general hatred in mainstream media and political discourse. Also, within the gay community, other minorities are persecuted by the elite. Seeing this inspired me to write the story,” Karthik said.

The play also addresses issues of generational trauma and social divide, and creates a safe space for people from all backgrounds to come together and enjoy a beautifully crafted story.

Many audience members have been so inspired by the play that they have come back for future shows. “It was great to see people bring their families along after our play. In fact, doctors at the National Institute of Mental Health and Neuro Sciences (NIMHANS) recommend patients to watch our play,” Hebbar said.

In an era where it is easy to hate and widen the gap by “isolating others”, this play emphasises that love and empathy can go a long way. Understanding the pain others are going through and working with them as they deal with it is the central idea that resonates throughout the play Amma mathu Suhail.

This play not only calls for acceptance but also highlights the importance of bridging social divides. It is a play for all ages and backgrounds; all it takes is an open heart and mind.
