Explain your journey with your tenure and forum three in the theater.

I studied in Cluni Convent, Jalli, and teachers and nons, I came to know that I have a qualification for the stage. Despite being a working professional, my mother Pushpa Devaiya actually enjoyed the theater and was active until she developed arthritis, while my father, Ka Devia, was deeply involved in music. So I grew up around the rehearsal, and although I was a shy baby, I felt free when I was on stage. Later, I felt that I should act and audition for the Forum Three. I did my first drama with him about two decades ago, which marked my association with him.

My parents Vishal was fond of Hindi film music. He used to sing or play music all the time and also place books with songs. A Rishi Kapoor film in 1978, Flower Khil Hain Gulshan GulshanContinued in June, I was born in May and he randomly named me Gulshan (laughing). However, my name is named after lyricist Gulshan Bawra. I had no surname for a long time, and took my father’s name Deviah, when I had to apply for a passport.

How did the theater help you as an actor?

interview ansr icon

Acting is an craft that needs to be developed and polished. For this, you must have access to a qualification and knowledge. I could not go to a drama school and NSD was out of reach for me. I had no courage to tell my parents that I wanted to become an actor without training. Therefore, I took to the theater and as much as I acted, I realized that there is a approach to every role.

The way you stand, use your voice or imagination – all come in the game. When I got a chance to work with Forum Three, I attended the workshops and gave it my best. You also learn from the seniors and it became a guide to understand the craft for me, which did not happen overnight; It took years. I also want to clear the misconception that if you do theater, you are a better actor. It is not how it is – it’s about how well you learn and develop craft.

Your film career started with Anurag Kashyap and That girl in yellow shoes’ International recognition. How have they influenced your film options?

interview ansr icon

Anurag gave me a great chance and he was at the peak of his career at that time. Not only was I in the right place at the right time, but he trusted me a lot as an actor. He will not tell you what to do, but working with him is like ‘I have chosen you for a role, now it is your responsibility to take it and make some of it.’

It is rare for anyone to have that kind of faith for your first role. Working with her was rather comfortable, although I was emphasized about my first role. Kannada was not considered in the film, but as I played the role of Kannadiga, I improved and added language to the role. This was a great chance that created more opportunities for me.

Would your career have taken a different trajectory, it started with the film Karan Johar?

interview ansr icon

I need something imagination to answer this because it is quite betting. My influences were Naseeruddin Shah, Manoj Bajpai, Irfan Khan, and we thought that a prominent person was not a quintament, but more like a character of a character.

But saying that Karan Johar is a big achievement as a hero, and if I was offered a role in his film, I will happily accept it. I never thought of myself as Karan Johar Nayak, but if I get a chance, I will not reject it. I too did not see myself in a Bhansali film, but I was and I hugged it. Also, when Karan Johar launched you, you catch the eyeball. This would have been a huge benefit. No one can deny that it is very challenging to pay attention only in the line of this work.

Did you ever collide with the need for a good look that seems good and demand six pack abs normally?

interview ansr icon

It used to be a trend, and at one point, everyone looked alike – trendy haircuts and tight fabrics that pronounced their chest and biceps. I am not taunting anyone; This was only my observation and I told myself that I will not take that path, although I enjoy gyming.

Very quickly, in my theater days, a senior told me that an actor should have a neutral body type, so he can change anything on the screen. Being extremely manufactured, sometimes comes in the way of depicting your character. Also, I was 30 when I started the audition, so these ideas were already formed in my head and helped me stand out.

Why do different different Indian actors also struggle to get a chance on screen? If they do, they are reduced to silly comedy. What do you feel about joining the world of cinema?

interview ansr icon

I do not think we have also realized that we can write a variety of roles. I was working on a project and the director said that he wanted my character to be diabetes. I was excited and asked how would it affect the story? And his response was ‘nothing’. Being my diabetes, I was not going to influence the story in any way. We have diabetes who are cricketers, drivers, teachers. My character was to take insulin shots, which was also shown on the screen.

It is a creative place that many people are not searching because reality is quite different. For example, I went to a bank and met a manager, wearing braces on my feet. They work and live as everyone in general. The way we are part of society, they are, and it is to be done on screen as well.

When we think it as an inclusion, I think we are under pressure how we portray them – will we be fair and likewise. But once we normalize it and use creative devices, instead of representation, we can make it normal with creative writing and make stories. Does the kind of society we want are not? Changes of perception can help help.
