New Delhi:
Director Anurag Kashyap has spoken openly about the budget and revenue of films. Anurag Kashyap told how the budget of the film is spent on ‘stuff’. Humans of the Cinema“They’re not spending money on the movie. People need to get a reality check on this whole thing. One thing people need to understand is that when we make a movie, we’re working, we’re creating something. It’s not a vacation, it’s not a picnic. A lot of the money that’s spent doesn’t go into making the movie. It’s spent on props; it’s spent on the crew. You’re shooting in the middle of the jungle, but a car will be sent to a city three hours away so you can get that five-star burger you want. You’re not involved in the process of it.”
Anurag Kashyap also said that independent ideas are not getting support. He said, “In the mainstream, independent ideas work a lot. But the thing is that they don’t get support. Today you go to any actor, any star. They want to make sure whether it (the project) is a big project or not, whether it will be a hit or not, whether it will do business or not. They think ‘the script is good but what can we do so that it earns more’. If the script is good, they must do it. Everyone starts thinking what will happen after the film comes. But no one is going by intuition. We are all too involved in it. And social media is the biggest culprit.”

And in today’s time when people are actually making a lot more money than they were 20 years ago, they feel cheated. When I was working as a writer, my fee for the entire film was less than what a first assistant director gets per month today. But I cannot make the kind of film I made today.” Gulaal, Raman Raghav 2.0 And uglyThis is because of politics as well as budget.”
Anurag Kashyap also shared an example from his 2018 series Sacred Games. He said, “I can’t budget a film at that cost today, because when OTT came, a lot of things went haywire. For example, I have never seen so many vanity vans on my sets as I saw in Sacred Games. That’s how the culture started. Then you can’t reverse it. Eventually, people started getting paid who were completely ignored, who are the technical crew, who work the longest on a film. They come first, they leave last. The actor comes, shoots and leaves. But people who were paid the least started getting paid in a way, in a proper way. But a lot of extras started coming in.”
“Now you cannot go ahead from there. Backing off now will create a lot of gaps. It will take a lot of time. Actors will have to revise their prices. Now, even OTTs have realised this. Now everybody wants to reduce costs. What has happened is that initially everybody increased the cost but now they want to reduce it,” he said.
