Allah Rakha Rahman turned 59 years old on January 6, 2026. Born as AS Dilip Kumar in Chennai, he comes from a family deeply involved in music. His father, RK Shekhar, was a distinguished composer and conductor in the film industry. However, tragedy struck Rahman’s life when his father passed away, forcing him to start earning at the young age of 11 to support his family.

During the 1980s, Rahman worked as a keyboard player for leading composers and composed music for advertising jingles. In his early twenties, he converted to Islam and changed his name to Allah Rakha Rahman. His life changed dramatically in 1992 when filmmaker Mani Ratnam offered him his first film project Roja, a debut film that revolutionized Indian film music.

The Roja soundtrack became a nationwide sensation. Rahman won his first National Film Award for the album. He gave iconic soundtracks for films like Bombay, Rangeela, Dil Se, Taal, Lagaan, Rang De Basanti and Rockstar.

Rahman’s international breakthrough came in 2008 with Slumdog Millionaire. At the 2009 Academy Awards, he won two Oscars for Best Original Score and Best Original Song (Jai Ho). In the same year, he also received a BAFTA, Golden Globe and a Grammy. It is estimated that Rahman has sold over 150 million records worldwide.

Marriage

On the personal front, Rahman married Saira Banu on 12 March 1995 through an arranged marriage. The couple have three children, Khatija, Rahima and Ameen. His son Amin is following his father’s footsteps and pursuing a career in music. In November 2024, Rehman and Saira announced their separation after 29 years of marriage.

According to a report by Mint, AR Rahman has an estimated net worth of around Rs 414 crore, reflecting his decades-long contribution to music in India and globally.
