AR Rahman supported Kamala Harris
Rahman becomes the first international artist from South Asia and India to support a US presidential campaign. He supported US Vice President Kamala Haris through a 30-minute virtual concert supported by the AAPI Victory Fund.
AAPI Victory Fund is a political action committee focused on mobilizing Asian American and Pacific Islander (AAPI) eligible voters and supporting Democrat AAPI candidates.
Shekhar Narasimhan, chairperson of the AAPI Victory Fund, said in a statement about AR Rahman’s induction, “With this performance, AR Rahman adds his voice to the group of leaders and artists who are pushing for progress and representation in America. Are standing. This is more than just a concert, it is a call to action for our communities to get involved and vote for the future we want to see.”
AR Rahman presents iconic songs
AAPI Victory Fund released a teaser featuring Rahman and Indiaspora founder MR Rangaswamy preparing to perform. The entire event was broadcast on October 13 at 8 pm ET (October 14, 5:30 am IST) on AAPI Victory Fund’s YouTube channel as well as on major South Asian media networks. Rahman performed some of his most iconic compositions such as Singapene, and the performance also included messages highlighting Kamala Harris’ historic candidacy and commitment to the AAPI community.
Social media was flooded with messages praising Rahman for lending his voice to Kamala Harris. An ex user wrote, “Thank you @arrahman for making your voice heard. It is important that your iconic artists speak out against hatred and division. We need to come together to give a massive mandate to Kamala Harris as she stands against fascism, racism and division.
Another user said, “Musician AR Rahman has recorded a 30-minute performance video in support of Vice President Kamala Harris, which is expected to give a big boost to her presidential campaign ahead of the November 5 general elections.”
Rahman’s performance and Kamala Haris’ support are expected to garner votes from the Asian community in America. Most of the Indian diaspora is found primarily in four states: California (20%), Texas (12%), New Jersey (9%) and New York (7%). Elections are going to be held in the United States on November 5 when there will be a face-off between Democrat Kamala Harris and Republican Donald Trump.
