Ariana Grande announced in a post on Instagram titled “meow” that “The Boy Is Mine,” the eighth single from her latest album Eternal Sunshine, would be getting a music video. The post contained a teaser for the video, which also announced that the full music video for “The Boy Is Mine” would be released on Friday, June 7.
What’s in the teaser clip?
In a 10-second clip on Instagram, a man turns on the tap and puts his face in the sink while a creepy hand with a glass claw opens the door.
The music video follows “We Can’t Be Friends (Wait for Your Love)” and the popular single “Yes, And?”, which arrived earlier this year.
All three tracks are from her latest album, Eternal Sunshine. The “We Can’t Be Friends (Wait for Your Love)” video, which premiered on the day of the album’s release, references the 2004 film Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, in which Grande’s character begins a procedure that erases all memories of her ex-partner. However, “The Boy Is Mine” teaser has darker undertones.
Grande talks about the inspiration for the song “The Boy Is Mine”
“The Boy Is Mine” sparked Internet rumors about her relationship with Ethan Slater, the former lead of the Broadway show SpongeBob SquarePants. The song’s title is similar to a 1998 song by Brandy and Monica, which has an R&B-pop vibe. Grande said she “always wanted to reimagine” the 1998 hit, which topped the Billboard Hot 100 for 13 weeks, she said in an interview with Zane Lowe for Apple Music in March.
In a Rolling Stone review, Grande’s album Eternal Sunshine was called “a brilliantly exposed journey toward the end of her world—or at least what she perceives as the end. It’s a divorce album that moves through all the stages of grief, and the singer marks a fresh start with the most honest and inventive songs of her career to date.”
