After making a name for itself in the online art space over the past nine years, Articera opened the doors to its first physical space with an inaugural show in Bengaluru last week. Titled Scope of Possibilities, the exhibition features some of the most sought-after names in India’s contemporary art scene.

Initially founded as an online art gallery in 2019 by Varun Backliwal and Lisa Jain, Articera showcased the works of 34 artists at the unveiling of its physical space. From well-known artists like Laxman Aile, Gurudas Shenoy, Ashok Bhowmik and Vineeta Karim to emerging names like Smriti Gargi Ishwar, Ashu Gupta and Dushyant Patel – all from different parts of the country – Realm of Possibilities is a celebration of artistic treasures.

An explosion of colors greets your eyes as you work in watercolor, acrylic, mixed media, sculptures, oils, inks and more, patiently waiting for your attention. From the bright, jewel-like colors employed by HR Das and G Subramaniam to the soothing palette of Claire Iono and the stunning detail of Vivek Sharma’s work, a full spectrum of art is on display, including striking sculptures by Shampa Sarkar Das, Dinkar Jadhav and Are. Kandi Narasimulu.

According to the founders, the selection of artists for their first show was a celebration of those who have been a part of Artisera since they were the only online art gallery. At the same time, new artists have been included in the exhibition in anticipation of possible opportunities in the future.

“This physical gallery space is a natural progression in our journey, and we are excited about bringing high quality, curated art exhibitions to Bangalore, and at the same time, making it more accessible to more people able to enjoy art Creating opportunities to happen. And less challenging,” says Varun.

Articera is an understated, micro space, which not only gives artists ample space to display larger works, but also offers viewers the luxury of contemplating a piece at leisure. Plain white walls that offer no distractions and select light ensure the focus remains on the works of art. The artists’ names are clearly marked at the bottom of the wall on which their work is displayed; This does not distract observation, nor does it require squinting to ascertain who the creator might be.

Spread over 4,000 square feet, Articera has no shortage of space and, the founders have the foresight to invest in a thoughtfully designed storage area where customers can browse works that are not on display.

While the field of possibilities will be finished by the end of the year, the founders already have an exciting lineup of artists to welcome 2025. Senior artistes are performing in a departure from their usual style,” says Varun, adding that the first two artistes he will showcase in this format are Hyderabad-based Laxman Alley and Bengaluru-based Gurudas Shenoy.

“We will then have an exciting group show featuring three female artists – Smriti Gargi Eshwar, Ashu Gupta and Rakhi Shenoy – who are experimenting with technique, content and subjects. After this, our next big solo exhibition will be with Delhi-based artist Gurmeet Marwah, who is known for his satirical art works.

Varun says Articera aims to showcase emerging artists whose work has not been seen before in Bengaluru. Plans are also underway for it to emerge as a community space for arts and heritage.

The range of possibilities will be on display until December 20. Articera is in third placethird Floor, BKN Ambaram Estate, 648/L, 1scheduled tribe Main, Indiranagar Stage 1.
