Asrani passes away at 84: PM Modi, Amit Shah, Akshay Kumar and others pay heartfelt tribute to the comedy legend

New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed deep grief over the demise of veteran actor Asrani and remembered his cinematic legacy that gave people joy and laughter.

In an ex-post, PM Modi wrote, “Deeply saddened by the demise of Shri Govardhan Asrani ji. A talented entertainer and truly versatile artiste, he entertained audiences for generations. He added joy and laughter to the lives of countless people especially through his unforgettable performances.”

Noting that the late actor’s contribution to Indian cinema will be cherished, the Prime Minister expressed condolences to his family and fans.

Union Home Minister Amit Shah also paid tribute to Asrani’s contribution to Indian cinema and wrote, “The demise of renowned actor Asrani ji is extremely sad. Asrani ji contributed to Indian cinema throughout his life and made a place in the hearts of millions by making people laugh. May God give his family and fans the strength to bear this profound loss. Om Shanti.”

Actor-comedian Asrani died on Monday after prolonged illness. He was 84 years old. He was cremated at the Santa Cruz crematorium where his family gathered for the last rites.

Asrani’s manager Babu Bhai Thiba told ANI,Asrani passed away today at 3 pm At Arogya Nidhi Hospital, Juhu. He is survived by his wife, sister and nephew.”

Condolences are being expressed since the news was confirmed. While fans are remembering Asrani’s iconic performance, celebrities also paid emotional tributes to him.

From all my cult films Hera Pheri to Bhagam Bhag to De Dana Dan, Welcome and now our unreleased Bhoot Bangla and Haiwaan…I have worked and learned a lot from him. What a huge loss for our industry. May God bless you.” Asrani sir, for giving us millions of reasons to laugh. Om Shanti,” he wrote.

Kajol, Ayushmann Khurrana, Anupam Kher, Jackie Shroff and Adnan Sami also paid their last respects.
